Halifax, Ipswich. where is it?
« on: Friday 16 November 07 21:34 UTC (UK) »

I've been convinced for a couple of years that gr-gr-grandad was taking the mick on census when he said he was from Halifax, Suffolk.

Looking for some power tools tonight on the B&Q site it offered me Halifax, Ipswich as an alternative to Halifax West Yorks, so I thought I'd try to trace him again....

Googling finds a Halifax Primary school  be in the Belstead area

and a Halifax Road in Maidenhall..

Has anyone any local knowledge or inspiration?

Doesn't ring any bells. Pannifer is quite a well known surname in Suffolk/Essex.
Have you found him on 1841.

Therea a 9yr old in Colchester Essex with a Lydia.

OOh, I see what you mean (from that map).

Who'd have though anything would have come of an ancestor hunt when one's searching for cordless drills, eh?

Halifax yard & junction was on the River Orwell just down from Stoke Bridge along the Wherstead Road.
Just a bit further down the river was a yard named Nova Scotia where the greenland whalers used to berth. I think the Halifax name is from that area.

Catching up after weekend away with family  Grin

Hephzibah has it exactly - I researched a family in Halifax for an Australian a few years ago, most of the family were in the Wherstead Road, Ipswich area and in Wherstead itself.
It is more or less between the parishes of Stoke and Wherstead according to the Parish/Hundreds map of 1885 (reprint available at the SRO  Wink
