*Completed*Thomas REEVE in 1851 Census
« on: Sunday 18 November 07 19:16 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone help me to find Thomas U REEVE in the 1851 Census? he was born in Ashford in about 1832.

I am keen to find the names of his parents and also, if possible, to find out what the initial 'U' stands for in his middle name.

Any insights?

Kind regards

That's great; many thanks indeed.

Now to find out his father's name and what the 'U' stands for!

I note that in the 1861 Census there is a Mercy USBOURNE in the household; I wonder if this could be a clue?

Kind regards

I just don't know! Have searched the 1841 census (you'd think finding a Horatio aged 1 in Kent would be easy!) but am getting nowhere, under the surname Reeve* or anything starting with a U. Shame his marriage registration only says U!  Sad

There is a marriage licence for Thomas REEVE of Ashford bachelor & Mary USBORNE of Marden spinster, at Marden  14th July 1827.

It's a bit late though. Undecided

Many thanks for this. It seems gold-plated as far as I can see.

The mother - widowed by 1851 - came from Marden in Kent, and the name USBO(U)RNE fits with the name of the visitor Mercy Usbourne in 1861 as well as with Thomas's middle initial.

The year of marriage - 1827 - would make Mary about 21 or 22, which fits neatly as well, and of course it's just a few years before Thomas was born - estimated at 1831 or 1832.

This seems likely a really likely proposition; thanks so much for tracking it down.

Kind regards

Where are the family in 1841?

Ah, that's the $64000 question.

We have been unable to find them in 1841, despite having a whole lot of extra information, including the unusual name Horatio REEVE.

You would expect them to be in Ashford, or maybe Canterbury, but I have run out of ideas, and there's not even a Horatio REEVE being born in Kent - at least not on freebmd.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

This is a real gem, although having found what seems to be Mary Usborne's baptism in 1805, I can't find the names of the parents!!!

Thanks a lot for this helpful lead.

I think you need to pay to find out the name of her parents - see the charges link above.

There is a baptism for a Thomas USBORNE in neighbouring Staplehurst  16 Jul 1809  parents Alexander and Mary.

There is also a PCC will for Alexander USBORNE of Marden dated 31st Mar 1848 on the National Archives DocumentsOnline.

Part of the 1841 census for Ashford doesn't survive.  I'm not sure which part so perhaps it would account for the family not being able to be found in 1841 Undecided

Thank you all for this generous and very informative help.

With your assistance, I have a found out a whole lot more about this elusive family.

It looks as if Thomas Usborne REEVE was born in Ashford Kent, about 1832, probably a son of Thomas REEVE and Mary USBORNE who had married there in 1827.

He married Sarah Ann CANDY at Thanet in Kent in the June Quarter of 1866. She had been living at Thanet with her aunt Caroline BURGESS since at least 1851 - perhaps earlier.

At the time of the 1871 Census, Thomas and Sarah were living in Margate, but by 1881, Sarah was back with her aunt, Caroline BURGESS, this time at Ventnor on the Isle of Wight.  She is shown as Married, but there is no sign of Thomas.

It looks as if Thomas died on the Isle of Wight in the March Quarter of 1882, although there is no sign of him in the 1881 census.

Sarah Ann remarried several years later, in the September Quarter of 1887 on the Isle of Wight to William Cole NORMAN. He died at Godshill on the Isle of Wight in 1897, and Sarah died there in 1914. Her death is registered under the hyphenated name Cole-Norman.

Thanks so much to everyone for helping to bring this story alive.

Kind regards
