1901
RD 827 ED 4 Page 2
Atichison Bank, Gretna, Dumfriesshire
Mary Wilkinson, 24, general servant b. Sorbie, Wigtownshire
It might mean going back a wee bit. I can't find a marriage for James and Maggie - it could be one of those Scottish irregulars.
Now we know that Mary was b. Wigtownshire, we have a lead.

Wigtownshire is the bit that juts out into the Irish sea - got photos from both sides
I'm having probs tracing this family via BMDs - I might have to go for deaths of James and Maggie but will have another look at census info for 1881 and back.

Haven't yet found Maggie's birth but I have found a probable brother:
James Dickson. b. 2 Jan 1851, Kirkmaiden, Wig. Parents William Dickson and Mary Campbell
These must be her parents and Mary's grandparents, mustn't they?

Children of William Dickson and Mary Campbell from IGI
all Kirkmaiden, Wig:
James Campbell Dickson - 1851 Martha, 1855 Susanna, 1857 Daniel, 1860
Now Martha looks like the same age as Maggie - I wonder if she changed names

This site:
http://www.whatsinaname.net/
is good for Scottish names it lists Marti(e) and Matty as dims for Martha and there are the usual ones plus gaelic names for Margaret - check it out.
I'll do a bit more looking but must then stop for the night - sore eyes and bed time
PS - often to a carry on a female name - I have it a lot in mine with Carson cropping up

Could be that one of her daughters married another Thomson. Could be that it was Thomas and he wrote it down wrongly
I think you might be going up and down side avenues too soon, deb. Let's get the main roads in first and then the byways
