This is a very general post fishing for a lead ...
I am looking for information on a Richard Chapley or Shapley (the initial letter is not legible on his son's marriage certificate) who was a gardener, presumably in domestic service, around about 1817-20.
If he survived to the 1841 census he may have been listed as a gardener, servant or ag lab. I have a hunch he may have originally come from Buckinghamshire, though he worked for a time in Wiltshire, where he met a servant girl (Mary) and fathered my 3xgt grandfather (Ernest Hawkins).
At a guess he would have been born between 1785-1800.
Does anyone know of a Richard, Rich or Dick C/Shapley who might be worth me investigating further? I'm not terribly sure about how exact the last name is - as Ernest never used it as his own he may well not have spelt it correctly.
Any leads or possible research areas gratefully received!
