Gorse Barn cottages/Farm is still extant, I was going to get a photo for your relative but because of lack of a car I have not yet managed it although did put her onto an aerial photo. I could not find a telephone number for the farm but by mistake phoned Gorse Farm which is on the other side of the road and they told me that there were people living at Gorse Cottage Farm who rented it off whoever owns it. She told me to drive up to the farm as she was sure they wouldn't mind anyone taking a photograph but so far I have not managed to go. I also tried in the lists of local electors up to 1920 and found one or two who may have been your relatives but as the name was Smith I could not be sure they were the right ones. I am sure the 1911 census will answer quite a lot of your answers, only some four years to wait although I am told you can access it for about £40 but have not tried it.

I am at a loss on why they kept moving as farming was a steady buisness back then i thought so why did he not stay in one place. It wasn't as steady as you may think.Mechanisation & new working practises lead to less & less jobs, there were many left unemployed by this. There were those who were forced into industry as a result, others who tried to get work where they could. This family were one of the latter.

Tarnya, they were all in Nuneaton and as they only gave an initial such as A. Smith it was impossible to tell. I looked in Nuneaton as your relative told me that some had settled there There were so many Smiths in the area then (and now) in fact not far from those at Gorse Barn Cottages were another family of Smiths with similar names, very confusing! I would however pass those names on but have lost them since then and at the moment have not got time to look them up again in the Library. If however you have any addresses in Nuneaton then I can quickly look for them as they would not then take long.

Dear Al in vain no sorry no adresses for relatives .Mum did have a sister Dulcie or Dorothy think her surname was Aldacher or oldacher . Anyway she lived in Nuneaton near fire station i think. She had 3 children. My mum also had 2 brothers Reginald and Fredrick . My gran lived westbury road in stockingford from early 50s i think could have been earlier with a few lodgers i think but no sign of Edden Smith my grandad as i said he went on his travels in about 1926 so rumour has it . Fred lived opposite Gran in Westbury Road with his wife Florence but all no longer with us.Thats all the relatives i know about . Maybe some of those Smiths near gorse barn could be relatives but i don't know. Tarnya

Always a problem when children do not question relatives when they are alive as by the time people get intersted in F.H. it is often too late. There were three sites for Fire Stations in the town during the 1900s. I know a lot of Smiths in the Stockingford area, there is an M. Smith at 18 Westbury Road who is in the phone book, also know several Oldacres. No problem finding the one in Westbury Road in the 1950 electors lists but would that help you as I presume you have their details already

hi tarnya,
its quite rural, if you click the previus link and choose arley west midlands it will show you the map, if you then click satelite(?spelling!) you'll see that it is almost all fields apart from a few built up newer areas. i googled gun hill farm and found this http://www.farminguk.com/farmsale/details.asp?cat=37&sub=673&id=1544
although there are quite a few farms around that area.
incidentely it is also near stockingford which is where kingswood road is. julie
