My hubby's grandad was a coal merchant and shipbroker in Wick with branches at Blyth and Yarmouth around 1926 - 1952. His name was Alexander Pate (& Co.) and the family lived at 3 West Banks Terrace, Wick.
He died before my hubby was born, and following a family bereavement we have come across some old paperwork and would love to know more, or where we can find out about the business.
We are in Northamptonshire, so no exactly handy for Wick library!
Any kindly soul advise how/where we can find out more?
Im willing to do English look ups or anything else in return, have many years experience with family trees, but know very little about Scottish resources really.
Many thanks

Hi Andrae This link shows West Banks Terrace today. http://www.caithness.org/atoz/wick/photogallery/index.php?gallery=28 The website is a caithness community site and there is a message board. Heading near top left of main page for caithness.org has a drop down menu for messageboards. Several forums you could perhaps try. eg Genealogy, general.
Perhaps someone will remember your family? The John O'Groat Journal is a local paper but I see you have already posted there. Did the family remain in Wick after the 50s. Tricia

No, none of the family remained in Wick at all after the 1950's - they all moved down south to the Watford area.
Basically they moved up from Blyth to start the business supporting the steam trawlers chasing the herrings. When the steam trawlers finished they moved away from the area.
I suppose I might be looking for old newspapers with adverts in or something?
