DUNWICH Parish Records

I can look up baptisms, banns, marriages and burials at Dunwich St James covering the period 1832 to about 1900 as well as earlier records for Dunwich All Saints.

These are microfiche records so you must provide a name and an approximate date to help me out!  Wink

For a look-up request please start a new topic in the CENSUS and RESOURCE LOOKUP REQUEST board for Suffolk.

Historical Note:

Dunwich was at one time a substantial port and originally had as many as eight parish churches. But over the centuries most of the town and all of its churches were lost to the sea due to a combination of coastal erosion and violent storms.

All Saints – the last of these churches – suffered the same fate. Having had no rector of its own since 1755, the church was subsequently abandoned and what remained of the building fell into the sea around a hundred years ago.

St James – the new church – was not built until 1832. During the hiatus, most Dunwich baptisms, marriages and burials took place in one of the neighbouring parishes – typically Westleton. (I also have microfiche copies of the Westleton PRs.)

However, the records for All Saints do not stop in 1755. The local population continued to use the churchyard for some marriages (until about 1773) as well as baptisms and burials (until the early 1820s).
