Did you know that Wills proved before 1858, for the Manchester area, were proved at Chester (and are now available at Lancashire Record Office).  However, you can do a free search of the Chester database on

After 1858, there is a national index at Greater Manchester County Record Office on

http://www.gmcro.co.uk

and more often than not, they will do a look-up if requested.
