I have a Charles Holland that all census from 1861 - 1901 say was born witney but the one I could find is not the right one. I have just found in 1851 a Charles Holland lodging in Witney born 1825 Hailey.
Please does anyone have access to this parish records to see if this was indeed where Charles was born
so far I have been unable to find him on 1841 as I don't know his parentage
this is possibly his marriage but no guarantees yet
Marriages Dec 1856 (>99%) ~~~~~~~~ Hart Martha Maria Witney 3a 1049 Holland Charles Witney 3a 1049 Saunders Elizabeth Witney 3a 1049 Smith George Witney 3a 1049
He had a son william born Witney 1863

Good morning,
I have found the following
Charles Holland christened 25th February 1825 Witney, St. Marys Church son of Charles and Elizabeth, Tailor
William Holland christened 16th April 1861 St.Mary's son Charles and Elizabeth, Lab.
Haven't found a marriage yet, will have another look.

Thats interesting - Either there were two Charles and elizabeths or my william had a younger bro william who died as I am pretty sure the last william here will be mine

~~~~~~~~ Births Jun 1861 (>99%) ~~~~~~~~ Holland William Witney 3a 616
Hi,
This entry from Witney cemetary
1861 27th April Holland William 3 weeks, Duck Alley.
I have found marriage of Charles parents
Charles Holland b to Elizabeth Brooks (X) sp 6th June 1819 St Mary Witney Wit. William (X) Brooks, Hannah (X) Haynes
but I can't find Charles marriage to, I presume, Elizabeth Saunders. The disc I have covers Hailey, Cogges, Eynsham and Curbridge, plus Holy Trinity church Witney.
The baptisms for Holland at St Mary's Witney start with
Elizabeth Holland bbd of Abigail bap. 18th Dec 1689
The next entries are for Charlotte bap.16th July 1820 d Charles & Elizabeth, Tailor
Mary Ann bap.19th Feb 1832 d Charles & Elizabeth, Tailor
Thomas bap. 25th June 1834 s Charles & Elizabeth, Tailor
with, of course Charles bap. 1825.
I will look for other mentions of Holland e.g. burials, marriages, if you would like.
Thanks for this i am so confused lol
let me tell you what I have for fact and see if you have anything that will shine a light for me
I have an Evelyn may Holland who was born 1890 ish one of these 2 is mine but not sure which yet
Births Sep 1889 Holland Evelyn May Lambeth 1d 505
Births Jun 1891 Holland Evelyn May Brentford 3a 151
Evelyn married George Bishop in Wandsworth in 1910 and the marriage cert says father was William and he was a Builder - one of the witnesses was a sarah Holland.
a search of 1901 for evelyns with fathers william brought me 2 returns but one had the wrong middle name so I am left with this
We apologise for any inconvenience caused but are sure you will appreciate the importance of this issue. This census has William as being born 1863 Witney Oxfordshire a caretaker in a boarding school.
I am pretty sure this William married Sarah Ford in 1890 but have not as yet got cert to prove any of this I realise I will have too.
Going back to 1871 census just 2 returns for william Hollands in witney that fit close enough - one is son of solomon and Mary born 1858 (solomon is I am sure one of the sons of the Charles and elizabeth you found) The other william is son of Charles and elizabeth (possibly Elizabeth Saunders) he was born abt 1864 and I think may be the brother of the William who was born and died in 1860-1861.
Those parts I am sure I have correct but we are now left with 2 Charles Hollands both down as being born 1825 witney - I cannot find the charles son of the charles and Elizabeth you found on a later census to 1851 so at first I assumed he was one and the same but then if you look at 1851 there is also a Charles Holland born 1825 living in Witney who is down as being born Hailey.
confused? I know I am
Oh my goodness!
No wonder you are confused! I have found Solomon's marriage in 1852 and he is down as son of Charles, Tailor. I will read through your details and see If I can be of any more help.
Will get in touch later.
Hi,
I don't think I can help any further with this. I found the two Charles born 1825, on Census but unfortunately I don't subscribe so couldn't look at the originals to see if there was anything to give any clues.
There are no other entries for children of Charles and Elizabeth, Lab. Presumably he moved from the parish of Witney, as William b. 1864 is not listed on the disc, but of course could be in another Oxfordshire parish.
There is a burial record for Charles Holland on 31st Aug 1872 age 52 yrs of Corn Street Witney
There is one Charles that I found born in Pyrton, South Oxfordshire b. about 1823 to a John and Lydia Holland on IGI. He might be the other Charles in the census.
May I suggest you get in touch with OFHS and ask them to check all parishes for Charles. There is a charge, but it may help you to eliminate one of them.
Sorry I couldn't help more.
Good Luck
Escargot (oops, I think I may have posted this twice....)
