Hi Iria, Thanks for that, my problem is where are they 1861?  I cannot find them anywhere not even dc's if they all had died somehow.  Peter's parents are also in meiklejohn's Vennel in 1851 james & Margaret then they have moved to the High Street by 1861 but not Peter & Ann.  The rest of his siblings either stayed in Alloa or moved to Fife and one sister to Leith and he is not with any of them.  Cheers Evelina

I can help Evelina!

I am Peter Laing and Ann Younger's great great great granddaughter.

In 1861 Peter and Ann were in Australia having emigrated in 1853 aboard the Shackamaxon, and that's why he didnt appear on the 1861 census. Peter and Ann settled in South Australia, and had 7 more children here.

I would be delighted if we could connect and swap more information. You can contact me direct on howkinattpgdotcomdotau
(replace the at with a symbol and the dot ). Im so glad to have found you and Im looking forward to swapping information.

Hi there - I stumbled on this thread by accident.

Meiklejohn's Vennel is so called as it ran alongside Robert Meiklejohn's brewery in Alloa.

He moved to another site in 1852 and leased the premises to George Younger & Sons - it was sold to them in 1871 and became known as the Candleriggs Brewery, eventually becoming the third largest in Scotland.

It may be that Ann Younger was a member of this famous brewing family.

There is another Younger (Alloa) family thread on this website.

Not sure if it's of interest, or relevant.

I was fortunate enough to be able to help supply some information.

Jan,

If you could be a bit more specific about your gran, somebody may be able to help.

First name and date of birth etc., etc. would be a good place to start.
