James COOKE and Hannah KENT
« on: Sunday 25 November 07 00:06 GMT (UK) »

I have this marriage in my family tree as occurring at Burgate in about 1745. Can any one shed any light on this record for me. I can not find my reference for it, or where James Cooke came from

According to Boyds marriage index, that is the year and place of the marriage.

Hi Tony, and welcome to Rootschat.

The only way to get more details is, I think, to look at the parish records. If you're local, they'll be in the county family history centre. If not, the local Latter Day Saints church family histoy centre will be able to help.

And, I must tell you, to get back as far as 1745 is pretty good. Most of us have to stop there, if not before!  Wink

Ah, yes, but If I can get back to the 1690's there is a fair chance I can get back to  the 1500's fairly easily!

Welcome Tony

I'm afraid that this may not necessarily be the case.  The earliest parish records start at about 1558 and having several Suffolk parish records on microfiche, I  can tell you that the early records are normally extremely scant and difficult to read.

Prior to the Marriage Act of 1753, very little is usually given in marriage registers, if the marriages were registered at all.  During the 1640s and '50s, for example, it's estimated that a third of all marriages went unregistered.  Normally just the names of the participants and the date of the marrriage are given.

From 1754 to 1837 the only information given in the registers was:

*Date and place of marriage.
*Names of both parties
*If either of the parties is a minor, this should be mentioned, though it would be rare for ages to be given.
*Whether they are "of the parish" if not, the Parish of settlement should be given.
*Marital Status - ie - Single or widowed.
*Names of 2 marriage witnesses.

It might be worth checking out the Burgate marriage entry of 1745, but I doubt that you would glean any further information.
