Mary Anne WATSON _ Gedney
« on: Saturday 24 November 07 19:53 GMT (UK) »

Hi there,
I have a family that came to Australia. John Watson and his wife Maria (Riley). With them came children Elizabeth, Gilbert, Sarah jane and William ( my line). They also had a daughter mary Anne who was born 11 April 1834 in Gedney. She did not come out with the family and am assuming that maybe she was married (would have been about 21 at the time) and therefore satyed with her new family. So I just want to know what happened and if any one could find a marriage for me I would be most grateful. The family lived in Fleet and Gedney up to 1850 (when William was born) and came to Oz in 1856.
Thanks for taking the time to  read  this

Hi Clocker,

Gedney would be in Holbeach Registration District and there are several possible marriages of Mary Ann(e) Watson on FreeBMD during the period:

Bet. Jan-Mar 1854   Holbeach 7a   Page 484
Possibly to William Green or William Mucklin.

Bet. July-Sept 1847   Holbeach 14   Page 575
Possibly to John Whyers Goulding, Jeremiah Spriggs or William Charles Watson.

Bet. Oct-Dec 1854   Holbeach 7a    Page 727
Possibly to Noah Barker - only 3 names on this page, 2 female!

Unfortunately there are also marriages in other nearby districts as well.   Not much help I'm afraid!

Thanks for that. I am more inclined to think the 1854 ones as that was before the family left for Oz. My thinking is that if she was unmarried she probably would have come with them in a family unit, as their other daughter Elizabeth at 16 travelled seperately from them although she was on the same ship. So I need to look at 2 the  marriages to eliminate them. Can you tell me where I can get the details and how much it will cost. Thanks for your help

I think William MUCKLIN can be discounted - from the 1861 census, he appears to have married the "other" woman (Sarah Ann PINDER).

Hi Clocker,

Jeremiah Spriggs can also be discounted.  I have carried out a search of the 1861 census for a Mary Ann(e) ? born Gedney 1834 +/- 2 years and it is not producing any results - but there is always the possibility she is lurking there somewhere under a mistranscribed name!  Have you also considered the possibility she may have died?  These are a few deaths and there are others elsewhere in Lincolnshire in the name of Mary Ann(e) - you can search them yourself at
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ but bear in mind that if she died before 1837 she will not be listed.

Mary Watson 1849 Bet. Apr-Jun Holbeach Volume: 14 Page: 293
Mary Watson  1853 Bet. Oct-Dec Holbeach Volume: 7a Page: 206

You can order certificates online at the GRO - £7 each:

Thank you so much for the information. This whole family history stuff is a bit of a learning curve. I thought there was a possibility that she had died, but think I will follow the possibility of a marriage first and try and find children and work back from there. Thanks for the costings. Thank goodness Christmas is coming ........what does I want for Chrissy      Roll Eyes......a certificate or two would be lovely. Grin Grin

Some kind person found this for me so it appears Mary was alive and kicking in 1851. So I think we need to continue down the marriage and children line to find her.
