Hi,
I'm looking for information about BENJAMIN BLAKE HALLADAY, b. 1876 in Ontario, Canada. Married to Grace Daly Young in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he became a widower in 1921.
His death is listed as Dec 23, 1927 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
I don't know when he arrived in Australia or any details about his life there.
Regards,
Kathleen

Sue,
Thanks very much. Yes, I agree with you on the matter of caution. I often use that site as a guide only.
Actually, the person who posted the 'facts' about Benjamin Blake did not have the correct name for his mother.
Regards,
Kathleen

you can order a copy of his death certificate on line. This should say if he was married and whether or not he had any children. The certificate should also state how long in the colonies. these facts will only be as reliable as the informant was.
you can also use a transciption agent to save on costs.
kind regards Jenn

Hello there Kathleen
re the comment
One contributor on another chat site I found in Googling says Benjamin visited Australia often as something to do with bicycles. 'graham blake halladay' the contrbutor goes on to say "he is buried overlooking The Bay of Sydney" by which I suppose he means Sydney Harbour .
made me think he was probably buried in Waverly Cemetery , so I contacted the cemetery hoping for some information
this is what I received back
"WAVERLEY CEMETERY & South Head General Cemetery ABN: 12 502 583 608 E-mail: Cemetery@waverley.nsw.gov.au Web: www.waverley.nsw.gov.au/cemetery Ph: (02) 9665 4938 FAX: (02) 9665 4785
Dear Visitor
Thanks for your message.
To carry out a search for grave locations we need the following information: The full name of the deceased you are looking for, An approximate date of death (year is fine), or any other cross referencing information you may know like the grave number or division details. There is also a fee of A$14 per allotment / or deceased. This covers the search and provision of the information and maps from the records. Due to a very high number of requests in recent weeks, the turn around time for searches is currently 10-12 working days from the time of payment processing (allowing for postal deliveries and usual cemetery business demands).
An additional service proving very popular is the provision of photo images of the allotment. For just an extra A$12.50 we can provide up to two B/W photo images of an allotment (one detailing any monument or inscription). The images will be sent with our reply and maps, but they can also be sent electronically if you prefer.
A full Archive Search can also be carried out. The fee for this service is $35 per deceased and involves transcribing any relevant information from the interment forms/registers. Archive Search turn around times are currently five (5) working weeks. An Archive Search also includes what is provided in a general search and map request.
Alternately for the simple $14 search and maps request we can process your order over the counter while you wait. We take cash, cheque and credit over the counter. Office hours are 9-5 Monday to Friday, 9-3 on Saturdays. The office is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
Your search can be arranged via the post (to the address below), E-mail or FAX if you wish, or in person at the Waverley Cemetery office where we can search while you wait. We accept cheques made payable to Waverley Cemetery and can process credit card payments on Bankcard, MasterCard, or Visa. Our Fax number is (02) 9665 4785. Waverley Cemetery took control of South Head General Cemetery in 1942, any payments for that cemetery should therefore be made payable to South Head General Cemetery. Our phone number is (02) 9665 4938. Our direct E-mail address is Cemetery@waverley.nsw.gov.au. For more information about Waverley Cemetery visit our web-site at www.waverley.nsw.gov.au/cemetery.
There is no cemetery record list for general sale. Likewise, unfortunately, we are not in a financial position to host a search facility on our web-site.
Waverley Cemetery St Thomas Street Bronte NSW 2024 www.waverley.nsw.gov.au/cemetery Cemetery@waverley.nsw.gov.au "
certainly very detailed etc but it would be cheaper to get the deather certificate!!
hope this is of some value to you
kind regards Jenn

Jenn,
I really appreciate your efforts on my behalf. You're right -- that's an expensive proposition -- too much.
Interesting, isn't it, how very different the practices are in different places? Sometime ago, on another RC board, a woman in England requested similar information about a relative buried in Canada. I found the address for her, and when she contacted them by email, they said they would forego payment for an overseas person. The fee was not as large as this, but I mention it as an example of the differences.
Again, many thanks.
Kathleen
