Richard WHITPAINE married Mary SCRASE, 18 May 1705, Clayton, Sussex. Any chance the Index mentions if Richard was a widower? I think he may also have married Mary GOFFE, in 1702 at Henfield. Mary (Goffe) WHITPAINE was buried in 1703.
Thanks Jack

Hi Jack,
Using the SMI this morning so thought I would look yours up. There is no mention of him being a widow but it is mentioned in both the marriage to Mary Scrase and Mary Goffe that he is from Hurstpierpoint.

Hi Jack
It doesn't say widower
Richard and Mary Scrase got a licence on 12 May and it says he is a gent from Hurstpierpoint and she is a spinster from Westmeston. They married on 18 May at Clayton and she is described as Mrs and he as Mr.
The marriage of Richard and Mary Goff just says Mrs otp and Mr from Hurstpierpoint.
It is likely though that it is the same Richard I would imagine?

Hi swebby and kerryb,
Thank you both for your efforts. The trick now would be dicovering how many Richards were living at Hurstpierpoint at this time. Would there be militia lists for this date?
Jack

Hi Jack,
You could try the following website and contact the researchers there. Richard Whitpaine does appear in their list of researched surnames. Mid Sussex Roots www.mid-sussex-roots.net
