Catharine Dunbar b. 1821, Lonmay, Mother
« on: Sunday 25 November 07 12:10 GMT (UK) »

Hi

I am trying to find out who Catharine Dunbar's mother was.

I think I have correctly identified her birth on 16th July 1821 (reference (O.P.R. Births 219/ 0030 0011 Lonmay (Balearn)), where her father is listed as Charles, but have now got stuck with any further progress. Any further informaton on her father (his birth etc.) and/or his marriage date would also be very useful.

If it is of any further use Catharine Dunbar married Thomas Yule on 30 July 1839 in Lonmay (Ref: O.P.R marriages 219/0030 0139 Lonmay).

Thank you

Hi Roy

Catherine died in 1889, Old Deer, Aberdeen. (GROS Ref - 228 page 29)

If you go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk , you will be able to view and download the death cert image (6 units = £1.20) This should show her mother's maiden name.

Thanks, I will have a look. I am too used to looking at english/welsh marriage and death certificates where the information supplies is not as detailed as on the Scottish certificates.

Roy - you'll love the Scottish certs  Smiley  Sadly, most of my line came to Wales before 1855, when Scottish full registration began, but I've traced lots of collaterals   Smiley

Yes it definitely get much harder the further you back especially in Wales (where half of my lineage comes from) and England. For info I have managed to identify her mother as Mary Cheyne, now I have to try and identify which one! I have take a reasonable guess at Catherine's mothers birth as being around 1800 as Catherine was born in 1821, and have found 3 Mary Cheynes from Aberdeen (born between 1795 and 1805 - 1800, 1801 and 1804).

Hello roycymru,

I wonder whether you have proceeded further with this search?

It looks as though Mary (CHEYNE) DUNBAR is rather older than you thought ...

From the IGI, a Charles DUNBAR married a Mary CHEYNE in Lonmay in 1803.  From the IGI, children b Lonmay with father Charles DUNBAR (mother's name is not recorded unfortunately) are Charles 1803, Mary 1805, James 1808, Robert 1810, Margaret 1812, William 1817, Barbara 1819, Catharine 1821 and Cumine 1824 (I note from the IGI that Thomas YULE & Catherine DUNBAR named a child Cumine).

From FreeCEN, in 1841 in Lonmay there's a Charles DUNBAR 68, Mary 58, Cumine 16, Mary 15 ...   And in 1851 Charles is 79 and Mary 69, both b Lonmay.  So it looks as though you may be lucky enough to find that either or both may have survived into the time of Statutory Registration!

A free search on SP, refining parameters, reveals the following:
A Mary DUNBAR, other surname CHEYNE, died age 78, in 1861 in Lonmay
A Charles DUNBAR died age 87, in 1858 in Lonmay

HOWEVER ...

Perhaps a lot of the work has been done for you  Cheesy

A Google (I Googled for Dunbar + Balearn) finds the following site:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~cheyne/200705-p/index.htm

It includes Thomas YULE & Catherine DUNBAR and descendants and ancestors.

Have fun,

Thanks very much for this. Excellent work. In the interim I too have managed to find Dunbar marrying Cheyne in Lonmay 1803.

I also found names for the children of Catherine (Dunbar) and Thomas Yule in the 1871 Census (lonmay ed:3; line 18: Year 1871) and the names of their children match closely with those for Charles Dunbar and Mary Cheyne which seems to tie them up Charles (1840), John (1842), Mary (1843), Thomas (1845), Chatles (1848), Catherine (1850), Margaret (1852), Isabella (1854), Cumine (1857), Alexander (1859). Not much to do on those cold Scottish nights!

I will look up the Freecen  1841 and 1851 census for Charles and Mary. Have you got the specific details and/or the search entries that brought these up to save me having to try and find the correct entries?

Have you also got the specific SP references for the death of Charles and Mary so I can download copies of the certificates?

The rootwebs link you have found looks brilliant with so much information. I need to spend time a go through this carefully.

Thanks again

Hello roycymru,

I think you'll find the people in the 1841 and 1851 censuses on FreeCEN pretty easily - it's very late here(!) so I won't go searching now.  Cumine would certainly be easy to find!  And the others also given that I've stated names, ages and places.  Similarly for the death certs on SP given that I've mentioned the names, ages, year of death and place of death.  But give a yell if you have any problems.

Yes, that CHEYNE site is a good one and very well presented - and includes lots of detailed extracts from the OPRs.  But you will probably be able to add info to it especially once you download more certificates.

Hello JAP. Hope you are well rested after a good nights sleep.

Just to let you know the deaths look like the correct ones. Mary Dunbar (Cheyne) died on 18 March 1861. Her parents were Robert Cheyne and Barbara Cumine . Her son Cumine Dunbar was present at her death.

Charles Dunbar died 3 Aug 1859. His father was James Dunbar. Cumine Dunbar (son) was also present at his death.

As your search revealed they had a son Cumine and as it is an unusual name I think this is enough to confirm.

The 1851 Free Cen search for Charles Dunbar in Lonmay Aberdeen provided interesting results!

Out of idle curiosity on the 1851 census I thought I would look and see who was living in the previous and next households to Charles and his wife Mary:

Previous to Charles and Mary Dunbar are John Yule and his wife Margaret and family. (Yules are also part of my family tree. I have to work out which ones these are))

After Charles and Mary is their son Cumine Dunbar and his family

After them is another of their sons Robert Dunbar and his family.

Then we have Thomas Yule (my second great grandfather) his wife Margaret and their family!

WOW!

Hi roycymru,

Looks like John YULE/Margaret is a second marriage (on the basis of Margaret's age and then checking the 1841 census on FreeCEN, and checking the IGI).

John YULE m Isabella MILNE 31 Mar 1839
They are in the 1841 at Backfolds Lonmay with John jnr aged 7 months (can't see his birth).  Also a Mary MILNE 6 (child of Isabel?).
They then had George 1845 and William 1846; also presumably Isabella whose birth I can't see.

Presumably Isabel died.

John YULE m Margaret WALKER 27 Aug 1848.
They had Elizabeth 1848 (perhaps did not survive), Alexander & Barbara 1850, and then Thomas 1851, Mary 1853, Ann 1856, Charles 1858, Andrew 1859.

Perhaps John YULE is the John YOOL, father John YOOL, bap 1818, Episcopal Lonmay (I mentioned him in your other thread).
