Would it be possible for SKS to check the 1841 UK census for Mary Smith born 1818/1819 Boughton, Chester - father's name Thomas, occupation - gardener. I am assuming that the family were in Cheshire during 1841 as Mary married in Birkenhead (Robert Shropshire) in 1845.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
Yvonne

Hi Yvonne,
I've had a look for any Mary Smith's in the right age group in either the Chester or Birkenhead area but there is nothing obvious. It doesn't help that the ages are rounded down to the nearest 5, no birth place is given (just whether they were born in the county or not) and no relationships are given. There are 111 Mary Smiths in Cheshire in the right age group!
I assume you have the marriage certificate, are the witnesses names any help? Have you tried to find Thomas Smith, gardener in the 1851?
Sorry I can't be more help,
Jean

Hi Jean,
Thanks so much for your reply and effort. I took a pay-per-view on Ancestry and last night I had a great stroke of luck. I found Mary Wynne nee Smith on the 1871 census at the home of her mother Elizabeth (mother at the ripe old age of 80). Mary was listed as Mary Wynn Smith, which in actual fact was a transcription error because she is listed as Mary Wynne on the original document but the 'e' looked almost like the abbreviation for 'ditto' under Smith. I had assumed that Mary died before 1871 as she was not listed with her husband Charles Wynne and two daughters in Birkenhead. You can imagine how excited I was to find her, as well as track her family back to 1841 - although I still cannot find Mary on the 1841. I also found the correct parish record on the IGI and she was baptised in the Congregational Church Queen Street and not in the COE Cathedral as I had originally thought.
Thanks once again for your interest.
Regards,
Yvonne
