FLOYDs from Berkhamsted
« on: Sunday 25 November 07 19:48 GMT (UK) »

Hi
My gg grandmother was Louisa FLOYD. According to LDS she was christened at (Great) Berkhamsted on 20 OCT 1811, Duaghter of Richard FLOYD and Sarah.
I have been trying to find out about her parents for years with no success at all. My gg Grandfather was William HOW christened 27 Sep 1801 at Abbots Langley, and I have traced the HOW family in detail back to the 1500s with some references earlier, but I have never found records of a marriage or of any FLOYDs.
It is particularly frustrating as Abbots Langley is the next village to the North of where I live and was born in Croxley Green.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards
Phil HOW

Hi Phil

All Herts marriages up until 1837 have been indexed, but not published and are only available for viewing at HALS.

If Richard and Sarah married in the county, they should be listed.

Hi
Thanks for the links. It looks as if I will have to wait until I have time to visit HALS before I can go any further. I imagine that will be when I retire, and I'm only just turned 50!
Thanks anyway.

Hi Phil

You may get lucky because some Herts rootschatters do go to HALS regularly and may be able to help.

However, HALS always used to offer the folllowing services;

Searches which take less than  5 minutes are free of charge.
Searches which take up to 20 minutes - £5
Full research service - £25 an hour.

You would need to check first, but as The Marriage Index (Allen Index) is easily checked, you may fall into the first 2 catergories.

Worth a shot, but please note that HALS is closed for stocktaking from the 3 - 8 December inclusive.

Hi Phil,

Of the 72 'Floyd'  entries in the Hertfordshire Allen Index of marriages pre 1837, I regret there is not one for Richard and Sarah.

Hi Phil

Thanks to Peter you can save the petrol because it looks as though Richard and Sarah were not married in Hertfordshire after all.  However, you now have the problem of trying to find out where they were married! Cheesy

Thanks Peter and Rick
Does the Allen index contain all herts marriages?
I can find nothing, though  the census all give Louisa (the daughter) as being born in Berko of Richard and Sarah.

Does the Allen index contain all herts marriages?

Hi Phil

I believe that The Allen Index comprises all known Herts marriages that took place within the county between 1538 – 1837, so it does look as though Richard & Sarah married outside of the county.

Before 1753 and the Marriage Act, marriages did not have to take place in church and as the index has been compiled from chuch records, it is possible for someone to have married in the county before this date and not be in the index.  However, if Louisa was born c 1811, her parents marriage should be on the index if it took place within the county of Hertfordshire.
