William Matthew Ward (Chesterfield) DEATH please?
« on: Sunday 25 November 07 22:45 GMT (UK) »

I wonder if anyone can help. My friend has been trying to find her grandfather's death for a long time. She does not use a computer. I have looked for William, but not had any luck either. He was born in 1857. He lived in Chesterfield and I understand the records would have been in the Our Lady church or what they call All Saints. I think the records were removed eslewhere.  Matthew married twice in 1890 and 1900 (both wives were called Elizabeth)

[ I think my friend's father was born on 13 Jan 1901 and baptised next day]
My friend thinks her grandfather was still alive in 1911 but cannot find his death after that, which must be in Parish records somewhere.

We would appreciate any help with this query?

Hi,

Where have you looked, on freebmd?  or have you gone right through the GRO index after 1911?  You can search there on ancestry free although it's quicker on sites like findmypast which is pay-to-view.

That was just to save going over the same ground!  Have you considered the two on freebmd that just have one first name, william, the ages could fit? 1916 aged 62 and 1919 aged 64 both Chesterfield?  Perhaps you could check those with Chesterfield register office giving details like his wife's name and address if known perhaps to confirm

Do you know I have just been wondering if those  two could be possibles! Its just that the birth years were not quite exact and the men had no second name. That might be an answer. Do you think that sometimes second names were not included on registers?
Thanks Anne

I think it would depend on what information the informant gave at the time, sometimes ages are wrong on death and other certificates, so it's possible only a first name was given.  He ought to be in the registers somewhere, or could he have died in a different registration district, perhaps in hospital?  Does your friend know whether his wife was still alive and where she lived?  As I said, you could check with the register office, they might be able to help.

Thank you for your help Barbara. I don't have any more information about his wife, but will certainly ask.
