Hello there everybody!
I am on a mission. I have been trying to trace my christian name back through my ancestors! I have so far got back to Penninah Ames born 1748 Tarrant Gunville. I believe she died as the parents, Martin and Mary AMES had another Penninah in 1751. This name must belong to one of the parents mothers/grandmothers as this name has constantly been passed down the family. Anyone that may be able to get me a further 'Penninah' back i would be very grateful to!!!
Thank you! Many regards
Penninah

Hi Penninah
I can't see an earlier entry for a Penninah as a first name but it is possible it was originally a surname - I have found this with my Allsopps where the commonly used first name Wandell can be traced back to a marriage between a James Allsop and a Susanna Wandell in 1648.

Hi there
Penninah is a christian name though, it is in the bible. I have never come across it as a second name. I am quite sure it will be the name of one of the mothers. I think i might need a Dorset records office lookup! hmmm.. Thank you for your reply

Hi penninah,
Have you looked for the family on www.dorset-opc.com? There's a variety of data there; baptisms, marriages, burials, census, trade directories, etc.

I came across a Peninah King, born Tarrant Rawston, daughter of Charles from BowerChalke Wiltshire and Elizabeth Burden. Her dates were 1835-1905, she died in Gloucester. Over the various census, her name was spelled Penonah/Punninnah and Peminah.

Hi Penninah,
Have you looked in neighbouring parishes for the marriage of Martin and Mary?

I have recently come across a Penninah in my tree. What a lovely name. Chase Edmonds married a Penninah Smith in Lambeth in 1850, she was chrisitened in Great Cheverill Wiltshire in 1828, parents Jacob and Ann Jane. I have yet to discover what she was doing on Lambeth. Have had this 'Chase Edmonds' on the back burner for many years, but have finally recently confirmed he is part of my tree! Thought he was, as Chase is a family name that runs in this branch - but could I link him in. Took years of detective work - but it paid off.
