1861 Census Place Name Question?
« on: Monday 26 November 07 20:50 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

I'm looking at the 1861 census for Farlam Parish - Class RG9/Piece 3908/ Folio 7/ Page 7

It gives the hamlet as being William Gill.

Does anyone know if this is an actual place or maybe the name of the land owner?

This is so cool. Kirkhouse is mentioned on another census. Thank you so much. Now I can get an idea of where they lived and the surroundings.

More of a geographical feature I would have thought, in the same way that Lincs people sometimes lived in "Fen".

It was the area that the Enumerator wandered through while journeying from Kirkhouse to Bowbank.

Your probably right about the geographical feature. I took a look at the description of the enumeration district and it says as follows:

"All that part of the parish of Farlam which lies to the west of the road leading from Mosshill End through Hallbank Gate to Falkin."

Thanks,

Yes it is  Grin Grin Grin Grin

I took a look at the microfiche again at 200% and it is Talkin. There's a little line that made it look like an F.
