Can anyone please make out this place name in Leics ?
Any help appreciated
We are transcribing the census for our local village - Jacksdale Notts
but can not read this place of birth or find it on Genuki

Greeting's .....

The bottom one is Loughbr'o  = Loughborough

The top one looks like it ends with Land ?
if so then the only three villages I know of
ending with land
Weston by Welland
Newton Burgoland

But seeing it was Loughborough for the 1st. One
Then I go for Swithland
although badly spelt
which is very close to Loughborough

Can you post the ref No & Year
so others can have a look for themselves

Notts Selston District 19 page 38

The family name is I believe actually Beeby
Edward Beeby (looks like Booby) Head Mar 43 Labourer b. Leicestershire Sandland?
Wife Mary and son Wm born Loughboro

On other Census returns although a bit economical with his age….

1841.
HO107 / 595. / Bk. 9. / Fol. 26. / Page. 16. Roe Buck Yard, Baxter-gate Loughborough.
Just .Y = Born within the County of Leicestershire.

1851.
HO 107 / 2085. / 290 / Page. 4. = Angel Yard off Baxter gate Loughborough.

1861.
RG 9. 2432. / 42. / Page. 38. Which we have seen. Selston. Nott’s

1871.
 RG. 10. / 3479. / 91. / Page. 40. = Selston. Nott’s.

1851.~71.Birth Place is :~ NORMANTON
Now there’s two of theses:~
Normanton ON Soar.( with a Hamlet close by called  “Stanford on Soar “
Normanton UPON Soar. on the Western outskirts of Loughborough.

Thanks for all you hard work and information
Yes I have looked at the 1851 and it does look like he was born Leics, Normanton but in 1871 he is down as having been born Normanton Notts - As there is a Normanton very close to Selston, I guess they misheard it as this county and not Leics.

I bet it could be Stanford also - looks likely - but for the purposes of my transcription I guess I have to put down Sandland - but will remember what you have said
