I am hoping someone can help me with this before this computer gets thrown through the window. When we changed to Vista from XP a few months ago I started having trouble attaching files. I always used my Yahoo email to send either census pages or pictures but since we changed to Vista all I keep getting is 'File not found' or 'invalid filename'. Ancestry will only save to temporary files now and sometimes I can find them but can only attach them by going through about 8 processes which is time consuming when I am trying to send 3 or 4 pages to someone.
When I tried attaching from my Windows mail they were found and attached in seconds. However tonight I can't attach anything at all through either of my email addresses. What has gone wrong?
An invalid filename is one that contains illegal characters like:-
@?/\"+$£%^&()!~#
File not found should be self-explanatory, but it means that the full pathname i.e. C:\Documents and Settings\Your name\My Documents\My Pictures\picture.jpg has not being given. It can also mean that it does not conform to the old DOS 8.3 naming convention e.g. filename.txt or it doesn't have a 3 letter filename extension e.g. .jpg. Since Vista is using the NTFS file system, in theory filenames should not be a problem so you you should be able to have a very long filename. I'm not sure whether Vista objects to strange filename extentions e.g. myfile.text compared to myfile.txt.
If you can't save to a specific folder or you are forced to save to a temporary folder then it sounds like this may be a permissions thing. Where would you like to save these files and what is stopping you saving them there? It sounds like you cannot save them there because you do not have permission because you are not the owner of that folder. You will need to change the permissions of the folder to allow you to save the images there by logging in as the Administrator and right clicking on the folder and select Properties and click on the security tab. Make the necessary changes so that your user name has full access to the folder.
A lot of the problems associated with Vista are about permissions. It is meant to be a more secure OS and unfortunately for the less computer savvy this means they are left confused and bewildered by the whole thing. It is now so secure that they cannot use it.
Permissions are about who owns a folder or file and whether others have the right to:
xrw
execute (run or launch a program) read write
