Can anyone find the marriage of William Mason (no details) and Sarah C Unknown ( born abt 1839 Sunderland, Durham)

Their daughter was my Great Grandmother (Alice Pritchard nee Mason). On her wedding certificate (1891), William is listed as deceased and also as a sailor, but I have been unable to find him on any census, I presume he was 'at sea'. I therefore don't have any details for him re DOB or where he was born.

I was hoping someone could find their marriage and possibly his age?

I have found his wife Sarah on the 1871, but she must die before the 1881 as the children are in an orphanage in Gloucs, so he must be dead by then too.

Any help would be terrific Smiley

I expect that someone will be able to assist you. It might help if you were to provide a little more information about Alice. When and where was she born? Where was she in various Censuses? Where was her mother Sarah in 1871?

Alice Mason was born abt 1869 in Sunderland, Durham. On the 1881 census she is shown in an orphanage with her two sisters Sarah Isabella B1867 and Mary J B1871. Their elder brother went to live with an uncle.

They are on 1871 census RG10 5017 92 30 -  living at 2 Russell Street, Sunderland, Durham.

William Mason married Sarah C Wilson in 1863. IF you think this may be the correct couple, you can get the certificate here:

The Sunderland registrar's site is free to search, http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/pages/registrars/ and gives a marriage in 1863 between William Mason and Sarah C. Wilson.

It is also on free BMD, 3rd quarter 1863, William Mason, Sarah Clark Wilson, Sunderland 10a 460.

Yes, that marriage record does look promising.

But to be certain, you should also order a copy of Alice's birth certificate to verify her mother's maiden name.

Thanks again Dave. I think it is the right one as my grandmother told me her mother was an orphan, and Alice was in an orphanage. However, as you say, it's probably a good idea to send for the cert to be sure.

I have finally found William Mason (listed as Moson) living with John Wilson and family on the 1861 census - John's daughter being Sarah Clark Wilson whom William later married. It's nice when things come together. Now I have his approx dob and place of birth.

Discovered this by accident...

Marriage:
Sarah Clark MASON
March quarter 1876
Sunderland volume 10a page 611

Spouse: John HODGSON (confirmed by search on the Sunderland Registrar website above).

In the 1881 Census there's a 37-year old widower called John Hodgson, a mariner born in Sunderland, living in lodgings in Roberts Street, Liverpool. I wonder if he was Sarah's second husband? [RG 11/3607 folio 71 page 32]

Either way, I can see at least three possible death registrations for Sarah (Hodgson) between 1876 and the 1881 Census. Two were in Durham (both 1879). The other was in 1880 in the registration district of West Derby which, geographically speaking, is not far from Liverpool.

So the plot thickens then!

There can't be two Sarah Clark Masons can there?

I have her on the 1871 census as married - hubby must be away, but I can't find him anywhere. Would he be on a census if he was on a ship?

By 1881 the children are in the orphanage, which suggests both parents were dead.

So in that ten year period, quite a lot happened didn't it? If she married in 1876, first husband William  must have died between 1871 and 1876. I'll have to see if I can find a death anywhere.

I haven't been able to find William on any census apart from the 1861, he's eluding me. Aghhhhh. Huh

By the way, the children were in an orphanage in Gloucestershire, which seems a long way from Durham. Was it usual to send them so far away do you think?
