Samuel CHURCH & Elizabeth LEMAN ; HOXNE
« on: Tuesday 27 November 07 17:30 GMT (UK) »

Hi all, this is my first time so i hope i am going about this the right way.
I have spent the last two years tracing my family tree and on the whole been quite successful.
Except for two dead ends one on my mothers side an Elizabeth Leman  b1796 and married an Edward Caudwell from Ixworth and the other on my fathers side a Samuel Church b 1809 who married a Betsey Ann Foyster from Rumburgh. Both my Ancestors by strange coincidence born in Hoxne Suffolk and there the search ends.
I can find nothing, so can anyone help? Please. Does anyone have any details on Hoxne parish records or indeed my two Ancestors?

Welcome hanjgaroo! Smiley

I am going to pop your post over to the Suffolk forum where I am sure the Suffolk regular contributors will do their best to assist you.

At the moment, RootsChat doesn't offer lookups from the Hoxne Parish Registers, but they are available up until 1837 from a volunteer at The Suffolk Surnames List.  Lookups from the Ixworth Registers are aso available.

http://www.suffolk-surnames-list.co.uk/

I can tell you that Samuel's marriage isn't on the Suffolk Marriage Index 1813-1837, which would seem to indicate that the marriage took place after 1837 or out of Suffolk.

Kind Regards
Rick Smiley

The Marriage of Samuel Church (c1809)  to Betsey Ann Foyster was in Flixton -by- Bungay 1834 and Elizabeth Leman (1796) to Edward Caudwell was recorded on Suffolk County Bishops transcript 23/12/1819 ,so possibly that could of been in Hoxne, although they spent most of there young married life in Ixworth.
My only piece of missing data is the parents of Samuel Church and Elizabeth Leman both consistently on various census records state Hoxne as there place of Birth, and thats were my search ends.
Are there any church records for Hoxne available, does anyone know?

Thanks Rick
Its great to know theres a possibility that my long search could reach a conclusion or very likley a new begining as i find and i'm sure you agree these searches never actually end but simply go in another direction, hopefully with my two names becoming four. We'll see.

Don't forget, Hoxne is a parish/village but it is also the name of a Hundred and there are 26 parishes within the Hundred  Smiley

Lorilee has recently joined the Parish Record Look Ups Exchange at Suffolk Surnames List - however, she can only offer marriages from 1548-1837.

The parish church is St Peter and St Paul Hoxne - you can have a look around the church at www.suffolkchurches.co.uk

I can only tell you that this would have been the parish he was residing in at the time of his marriage. This is not necessarily his birth parish.

If you mean a record of the marriage, then you could get in touch with Suffolk Record Office ,for a printout from the parish register.

As for Samuel CHURCH's marriage.  I think that we have established that it must have taken place after 1837 if it took place in Suffolk.  I wonder, have you checked the GRO indexes for it?

Some early marriages didn't make it to the index, but you may get lucky.
