William Edwin Berry on 1851/1861 census
« on: Friday 31 December 04 18:20 GMT (UK) »

:'(I am looking for William Edwin Berry, a bricklayer from Churchdown, Gloucester. He is missing from the 1851/1861 in Gloucester. His wife Alice and family are with him so he is maybe working in another county. Cry

Hi poirot,

if I am understanding you correctly you have already checked the 1851/1861 census and have not found William where you would expect him to be.

Have you managed to find him on a later census such as 1871/1881/1891 to give you an idea of where he might have moved to?

If you post again and give William's birth date and as much information as possible we will do our best to find him for you.

Regards

Thank you Darcy for your offer of help. William Edwin was born in Hucclecote in 1824. He married Alice Baker (not Clara, that was his daughter) in Tewkesbury in 1843. In 1848 he was at Barton Terrace, Barton St Michael, GLS and a Railway Lab. In 1871 he was living in Turnpike Rd, Hucclecote and in 1881 in Main Rd, Churchdown. I also have him on the 1891 & 1901 censuses.

Hi again Poirot,

first I am going to search the 1861 census for Hucclecote in the hope of finding William there.

In the meantime I'm sure Krissesjoint will have a go at finding him in 1951.

Here's hoping!

That's not good news Kris  Cry

It always bodes well for me if you can find them first!

Well, I'm away to trawl Hucclecote anyway - hope springs eternal....

Hi again poirot,

there are a lot of Berrys in Hucclecote Parish ( which includes Churchdown) but unfortunately no William Berry. I am posting the families below as they are from the same area as William - the same street in one instance - and in the same trade so you may be able to make a connection. I found something really strange too – what appears to be a mirror family………..

Thomas Berry, head, m, 65, Bricklayer, Hucclecote Glos.
Charlotte Berry, wife, m, 63, Hucclecote Glos.
Emma Burcher (?), dau, un, 28, Laundress, Hucclecote Glos.

PRO REF: RG9/1763
Hamlet: Hucclecote
Road, Street &c: Turnpike Road
No of Schedule: 90
Folio: 11

Mary Berry, head, widow, 58, Churchdown Glos
Frederic Berry, son, 33, Mason, Churchdown Glos
Joseph Berry, son, 18, Labourer, Hucclecote Glos.

PRO REF: RG9/1763
Hamlet: Hucclecote
Road, Street &c: Side of Hill
No of Schedule: 12
Folio: 4

Here’s the strange one – almost the same again!

Mary Berry, head, widow, 57, Ag. Lab., Churchdown Glos.
Frederick Berry, son, un, 33, Bricklayer, Churchdown Glos.
Joseph Berry, son, 18, un, Bricklayer, Churchdown Glos.

PO REF: RG 9/1763
Parish: Churchdown
Road, Street, &c: Not named
No of Schedule: 11
Folio: 38
Page: 2

Thomas Berry, head, m, 45, Bricklayer, Upton St Leonards Glos.
Amelia Berry, wife, 42, farm labourer, Freatham,Glos.
Thomas Ch. Berry, son,11, Labourer to Bricklayer, Linton Glos
Lydia Berry, dau, 9, Scholar, Linton Glos.

PRO REF: RG9/1763
Parish: Churchdown
Hamlet: Linton
Road, Street 7c: Swiss Cottage
No of Schedule: 74
Folio: 42

Hi Darcy & Kris,

I am really grateful for the time & effort you are putting into solving this mystery.

Thomas & Charlotte are William Edwin's parents and I have already found them. Mary with her sons is also mine. Perhaps the enumeration areas overlapped and she was clocked twice. Strange that the ages & occupations differed.

Thomas & Amelia might be worth persuing.

I feel William must have been working on the railway either in another county or he was in the pub Huh

Poirot, Smiley

I am sure you have already checked Barton St Michael for William but, as I said I would do my best, I checked it again - with no luck.

As Kris was unable to find William on the 1851 Index it looks as though he has indeed left the County for a while.

I expect you have done all the usual things to find him. I had success in a similar situation when I found my great grandparents again through the marriage of their eldest child.

Failing an opportunity like this it looks like William's whereabouts will remain a mystery until the earlier censuses can be checked in the same manner as the later ones.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Regards
