Hi suey
I wonder if you might download Open office:
http://www.openoffice.org/
It does everything that Word does but is free
Worth a try. open up the program first and then open up your old Word files in it.

Or you might want to think about using OpenOffice instead.
It's compatible with MS Word, Excel etc.
It's also FREE!

Can you get into Word by clicking on its icon?
If so, open the documents from within the program.

I see that both Dave and I both recommended Open Office. I'd try that while you explore what's happened to your Word.

suey - you got me worried, there. We also have Office 97, bought for old PC & re-installed on this (XP) - I've just tried Excel & Word & have no problems with either. If you have a recent restore point I'd be inclined to give it a go. Good luck!

HiSuey
I'm not sure if a System Restore would solve it. I think it just rolls back changes. Downside or Falkyrn would know.
Like mshrmh, I'm perplexed as to what has happened. Have you done anything to it since you were last able to open a file?

Sounds weirder and weirder
Did you copy something from elsewhere in the last doc you created/modified?
Have you got WordPad?
You could try opening them in that

PS - have you run a virus scan?
