Winterbourne in 1779
at the beginning of the century there were 120 houses
and about 500 inhabitants, of whom 26 were free holders
yearly birth were about 10 /burials about 10
the number of soulls is now about 567

On a table of a large monument is Written
In memory of Amy The wife of Thomas Symes esq of the Parish
daughter of Edward bridges of keynsham in the county of Sommerset
descended from the noble family of lord chandois' Baron of 'sudely castle in the county of gloucestershire .who  through her Extraction was Honourable ,yet by her exemplary life and manners,
became an honour to her family ,and after 17 years spent in her majority, and 20 years in wedlock ,in which interval she was  mother of 12 boys and 4 girls and changed this mortal state for an  immortal the 30th april 1662

Here is the body of Thomas Symes of this  Parish Esq
Son of john Symes of the county of sommerset who died 18th jan 1669 age 48 years
In the church is a monument bearing these details
Reader, thou treadest on the sacred Ashes of John Symes ,who in the  late and unhappy times of Reellion was forced to leave his Family home at pountisford County os Sommersey to seek repose in his old age in this parish
he was a Greatly renowed for wife -dom justice,integrity  and sobriety wich talent he did not hide in napkin'but religiously exercised in whole conduct of his life ,especially in the government of the county, where he bore honourable offices incident to a country gentle man as knight of shire  for 40 years on and upwards. he was carefull and solicitous to discarge his duty to god and his country for god was please to bestow upon him  several bages of his special favours, as lenght of days ,accompanied with most healthy constitution of the dody for about 80 years all so numerous posterity's even children s children,to the number of 100and up wards ,descended from his loins by his wife Amy,  the daughter of thomas horner, of cloved ,in the county of sommerset,and  when he did full of his days and honour, having lived 88 years 7 months and 17 days ,and seen the safe return of the prince' to his crown and kingdom, after a long and honourable exile hecheerfully resigned his soul to god that gave it ,on the 21th dat of october 1661

The reference to Sir John Henry Greville Smyth is probably to do with the fact that he, along with Richard Symes and two others, were the owners of Durdham Down in Bristol. They sold it to the City Corporation by Act of Parliament in 1861. You can view a copy of the Act at: http://www.bristol.gov.uk/ccm/cms-service/download/asset/?asset_id=19029109

Thanks i put the Message on because there was some one else looking for the family name  (Symes)
the name i am looking for is Walter Semple he Got the D.C.M. medal Love to find a photo of him
