Hi IMT
One way of establishing where they were is by associating them with nearby landmarks. Do you have a census reference for them in 1881 or 1891? Or can you give their details so that we can check the enumerator's walk, please?
kind regards, Arranroots

Hi imt There's a nice map of Westbury (including Henleaze) on the Francis frith site. Unfortunately I can't see much detail - you may have to purchase it!

Here's my interpretation of the route the enumerator was supposed to take (not all did as they were told!)
Commence at Eastfield Villas and take all the houses thence to Lows, Dorset Villas and all the cottages in Eastfield Terrace, Southend House, Manor House and all cottages thence to Pen Park including Laundry Cottages and JENKINS' near Pond, Kensington Cottage and cottage opposite occupied by BALL, Henleaze Lane to Durdham Down, Henleaze Park, lodges and farm, Claremont? and Stables, Henley Grove and Lodge, Springfiled and Lodge.
I don't know how much that helps - will have to look at some maps now, to see whether any of the above are mentioned.
I am not too familiar with the area - is Durdham Down where the golf club is now?
kind regards, Arranroots

Although one has to buy the O.S. 100 year old maps at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ one can search them without paying.
The zoom facility does not enable much to be read but I looked at W-o-T and panned towards the east a minute or so ago and could just make out somewhere named "East Field". Have a look-see, it may not be where you want, but it might help in your search of other maps.
Regards
Chas
P.S. for Arranroots - I note your Workman interest in GLS. There a Handy Workman in the 1851 census of Bisley

Of course I know the Downs!
Here is a reference to the cottages which seems to confirm that Henleaze Lane = Henleaze Road (quite long, as I recall?)
http://fishponds.org.uk/bristolmem.html
SIMPKINS, George (63) of 48 Trym Road, Westbury on Trym, Bristol. Son of Allen and Ellen Simpkins of 1 East Meadow Cottages, Henleaze Road, Bristol. Husband of Rosina Simpkins. Died 9/12/40 at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.
(George died in the Bristol bombings, so the cottages lasted until 1940. RIP George)
kind regards, Arranroots
p.s. Chas - I wonder if that is my missing Hannah - reverting to her maiden name to escape the law??

This site has some locally-themed books that look fascinating!

100 Years of Life in our Church 1907-2007
This book for our centenary year reflects on the faith and life of the Christian people who have gone before us in this place. One hundred years ago they built a church on a lane through green fields and parkland. Their intention was to be here for the people who would come to live in Henleaze as it grew as a residential area in the early twentieth century.
The Henleaze Book (2nd edition)
This long-awaited update of Veronica Bowerman’s original book contains much fresh information and many new illustrations and plans. It gives the reader a fascinating insight into the history of Henleaze There are also contact email addresses for the authors!

Hi imt
I certainly remember several old cottages in the area (near the present Eastfield Inn) when I lived in W-o-T in the 60s. I have a collection of the Reece Winstone "Bristol as it was" books & there is one which shows a "Henleaze Lane" and "Henleaze Road" as if they were different places - but that may just be the captioning.

Thanks, Old Bristolian. I too remember old cottages on Henleaze Road, just where Eastfield Terrace joins it. However, I had no idea as a child that it must have been in that area that my gg grandparents lived. Like a lot of families, my parents didn't talk about their forebears, even if they knew about them. Again my thanks for your interest in my search.
