map look up request WoT/Henleaze, Bristol
« on: Wednesday 28 November 07 14:47 GMT (UK) »

I'm wondering if anyone has access to a map of the Westbury on Trym/Henleaze area of Bristol in the 1880s.  In particular, I am trying to establish where East Meadow Cottages, Henleaze Lane were situated.  I have found searchable maps on the net but none showing the names I am seeking.  My g grandparents lived in the cottages in the 1881 and 1891 censuses.  Henleaze Lane is not shown on modern maps and I suspect that the cottages were either demolished for redevelopment or bombed during WWII.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

Hi IMT

One way of establishing where they were is by associating them with nearby landmarks.  Do you have a census reference for them in 1881 or 1891?  Or can you give their details so that we can check the enumerator's walk, please?

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Again, I'm astounded by your swift response, Arranroots!

My g grandparents were Walter and Lydia Cowley.  The 1881 census ref is RG11/2504, Page 8 and I think it's folio 128 (although the latter is not marked on the sheet).

I lived close to this area from 1948 to 1968 so know the streets quite well.  I suspect that the cottages were in an area known in my youth and to the present as Eastfield (East Meadow then perhaps).  I also know that several bombs fell where Eastfield Terrace joins Cheriton Place.  My mother was an Air Raid Warden for the area and my parents' home just escaped the Blitz by a matter of 50 yards.  The Germans were on a mission to destroy the Brisol Aeroplane Company in nearby Filton.  Numerous houses have been built in this district since I moved from Bristol but I would just like to be able to pinpoint where my ancestors made their home.

Thanks again for your offer of help.

Hi imt
There's a nice map of Westbury (including Henleaze) on the Francis frith site. Unfortunately I can't see much detail - you may have to purchase it!

Here's my interpretation of the route the enumerator was supposed to take (not all did as they were told!)

Commence at Eastfield Villas and take all the houses thence to Lows, Dorset Villas and all the cottages in Eastfield Terrace, Southend House, Manor House and all cottages thence to Pen Park including Laundry Cottages and JENKINS' near Pond, Kensington Cottage and cottage opposite occupied by BALL, Henleaze Lane to Durdham Down, Henleaze Park, lodges and farm, Claremont? and Stables, Henley Grove and Lodge, Springfiled and Lodge.

I don't know how much that helps - will have to look at some maps now, to see whether any of the above are mentioned.

I am not too familiar with the area - is Durdham Down where the golf club is now?

Although one has to buy the O.S. 100 year old maps at  http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ one can search them without paying.

The zoom facility does not enable much to be read but I looked at W-o-T and panned towards the east a minute or so ago and could just make out somewhere named "East Field".  Have a look-see, it may not be where you want, but it might help in your search of other maps.

Regards

Chas

Thanks to all who have responded.  Unfortunately the enumerator's route doesn't help much.  It maybe that what he called Henleaze Lane is now known as Henleaze Road. I did zoom in on the old maps site but could find no cottages named in the appropriate area. I don't think even Henleaze Lane was actually named on the 1881 map although the modern road follows the old route shown.  Durdham Down is what I always knew as "The Downs" as a child - a large public open space, gifted to the people of Bristol.  There is no golf club there.  I'll have a  look at the Francis Frith site but it may be that I will have to search more closely at the RO when I can get there (300 mile round trip). If I can't get there, then I must satisfy myself that I know I'm in the right area even if I can't pinpoint the exact place.

Thanks again.

Of course I know the Downs!  Roll Eyes

Here is a reference to the cottages which seems to confirm that Henleaze Lane = Henleaze Road (quite long, as I recall?)

(George died in the Bristol bombings, so the cottages lasted until 1940.  RIP George)

Arranroots, you are getting me closer and closer to the exact location!  Thank you so much.  Not only that - I may even have to send off for the Henleaze Lake book.  Sadly my husband's brother drowned there at the age of 10 in 1939 and it's probably the original quarry that drew my paternal g grandfather to the area as he was a stonemason.

I knew there had to be a silver lining to all the clouds that have been depositing the rain on us today!

Many thanks.

Hi imt

I certainly remember several old cottages in the area (near the present Eastfield Inn) when I lived in W-o-T in the 60s. I have a collection of the Reece Winstone "Bristol as it was" books & there is one which shows a "Henleaze Lane" and "Henleaze Road" as if they were different places - but that may just be the captioning.

Thanks, Old Bristolian.  I too remember old cottages on Henleaze Road, just where Eastfield Terrace joins it.  However, I had no idea as a child that it must have been in that area that my gg grandparents lived.  Like a lot of families, my parents didn't talk about their forebears, even if they knew about them.  Again my thanks for your interest in my search.
