Thanks for all the above/previous tips.
I have now been busy with the 1861 census and have the following queries.
1861 census, RG9/3645 folio 16 page 1 to folio 19 page 7
1. Sched. no. 16 - Is the daughter Mary Ann HIRST? With children Joseph and Ellen Hirst? (folio 18 page 5)
2. Sched. no. 24 - Is the family name THORPASH? With Isaac as Head? (page 6)
3. Sched. no. 24 - Is the place of birth for the parents RASKLIFF? (page 6)
4. Sched. no. 26 - What does the symbol/letters mean for Edward Billingham in Relation and Occupation? (folio 19 page 7)
5. Sched. no. 28 - Is Jane Cooper from NEWBIGIN? (folio 19 page 7) EDIT: Just looked on 1871 and she says HACKNESS!
6. Sched. no. 29 - Is Daniel Collins from LAYBURN? (folio 19 page 7)
You'll see that I've managed MUCH better with this one, and I've even remembered to put the folio and page numbers too!

Raskelf (in 1851)4. What does the symbol/letters mean for Edward Billingham in Relation and Occupation? Ap = Apprentice5. Is Jane Cooper from NEWBIGIN? EDIT: Just looked on 1871 and she says HACKNESS! Newbiggin is Northumberland, there's a Newby near Hackness which might be the place, on census looks like Newby in ..6. Is Daniel Collins from LAYBURN? Soyland - which is near Halifax You'll see that I've managed MUCH better with this one, and I've even remembered to put the folio and page numbers too! Brilliant AGAIN, Barbara - thanks for those.
Just one bee in my bonnet ... this Newby/Newbiggin thing.
I have found a Newbegin/Newbiggin Hall near Egmont in GENUKI (click here to see) which is reasonably close; only 14 miles from Pickering. And if you read the second paragraph it is actually referred to as NEWBEGIN which is the exact spelling of the census return.
What do you think about that one?

Righto ... nearly there now ...
1871 census RG/94844 folio 15 page 1 to folio 17 page 6
1. Sched. 1 - Is the niece in law called Elizabeth CHIRSTON? (folio 15 page 1)
This census is so beautifully written there is nothing really to query - except the above! I've tried the 1881 and FreeBMD to find a birth, death or marriage of this surname but nothing comes up 1860-1881.
