Hello,
I'm trying to collect info relating to my Gt Grandfather's oldest brother - Arthur Robert Dewey. He was born in 1882 in Witchford, near Ely, Cambridgeshire, England.
In 1901 he appears on the Camberwell census for London as a 'Car Man'.
In 1904 he returns to Witchford to be witness for his sister's wedding.
In 1906 it would appear that he is onboard SS Minneapolis, leaving London on 4th August, heading for New York (arriving 13th Aug). The 'List or manifest of Alien passengers for the US immigration officer' (charming!) lists what appears to be him - "A. Dewey" of Ely, Cambridgeshire. His fare had been paid for the Atlantic Transport Co and it is noted that he is looking after the horses along with a few others. Further down the document it notes that all of the 'aliens' would be returning to Europe a few days later.... but.... Arthur Robert Dewey is believed to have stayed in the USA.
Do any readers have any info about this?

hi genealiza, thank you so much for this information. i'll see if i can grasp the last few bits of info that could tie him, without a doubt, in to my Cambridgeshire relations.
interesting to see that Ruth Dewey's parents were American and German.
thank you so much for these sources. fingers crossed that it's the right person (i do have his date of birth at home in my notes).

thanks again Geneliza,
Using the info from the death certificate for Ruth, i've managed to find what appears to be the right death for the right Arthur on the US Social Security records on FamilySearch.org.
It states that whilst Ruth died in 1934 aged 47, Arthur went on to live until April 1973, when he died aged 92 in Wright County, Missouri. That record gives his date of birth as 28 Dec 1881, rather than the same date in 1882 that you've quoted from the WWI registration.
This then ties in with the definite Arthur Dewey records I've already got - he was born in 1881 and christened on 29th Jan 1882.
Now all i need to piece together is a couple of US census bits - that would confirm his place of birth... and then work out whether he didn't return to England after going to New York from London in August 1906 on board the SS Minneapolis... despite the records saying that they all would.
Thank you so much once again for helping me. My fellow RootsChatters have come up trumps so many times and so quickly too.
I'd buy you all a Christmas drink.. somehow.

wow. that's fantastic. thank you SO much
I'm convinced now that this is the right Dewey.
Amongst his sisters back in Cambridgeshire, England is an unusually named 'Albina' - to see it repeated here confirms it for me.
Add to that the date of 1906 - which is when i've found an A. Dewey of Ely, Cambs on board the SS Minneapolis heading to New York. Although the note on that list says he would be going home with the others, i guess he didnt.
thank you so much.

they certainly are!
whilst Dewey isnt that common, my tree is blessed with other unusual delights like Yarrow, Moden, Tingey, Babbage and Goltrip.
Researching those is quite easy!
