Somerset Wills

I've worked out that whatever survives of Somerset probate records were indexed & published in 1993 by Mervyn Medlycott - is there any way of accessing this except paying £50 for a copy? I'm too far from the Somerset RO.

And on a similar note - was there a record of the names of the testators whose wills were lost in WW2?

I'm looking for a James White of Shepton Mallet d. 1792 and his wife d. c1794 and trying to piece together her familes the Hole and Jeanes from East Pennard and Pilton.

Some of the Holes and Jeanes left PCC wills and they appear to have been monied people so I'm sure others of them must  have left other probate records - just any names from both from c.1700-1800 might help fill in a few gaps.

Hi Carole,
There are only two James Whites listed one for Martock and one for Wincanton. No Hole and four Jeanes, none in East Pennard or Pilton but there is a Rob Jeanes, gent. West Penard W. 1714 BUL DM106/119

BUL Collections at Bristol University Library, Special Collections Dept., Tyndall Avenue, Bristol BS8 1TJ. Reference is followed by "DM" and collection and bundle numbers.

Thank you - Robert Jeanes sounds likely - looking on A2A the SRO has photographs of an estate map of William Hole of Pilton c. 1728, illustrated with various scenes including a hunting accident, which they think may depict the death of Robert Jeanes who died in 1714 ..... it looks like he may have had the foresight to make a will while he was still healthy!
