Illegible 1841 census: Shoreditch,Tower Hamlets
« on: Thursday 29 November 07 22:49 UTC (UK) »

Could anyone help me decipher my gt-gt-gt-grandmother's family entry in 1841 census.
Name: Jane RAWLINS (aged 11)
Resident at 55 Old St. Rd, Shoreditch,Tower Hamlets,London

Her father is Alexander Rawlins (aged 30)[from her marriage certificate;barely legible on the census image but just about clear if you know what name you're looking for !].

What I cant decipher is :
-Her mother's name (also aged 30 ) ?
-Her father's occupation ? (If it's any help, he's described as a "broker" on her 1855 marriage certificate)

Another anomaly on her marriage certificate is that the two witnesses are both from her family (presumably her father and sister, from names/ages) with no witness from her husband's family. Was this common practice ? or perhaps a sign that they were illiterate (or not even there, for whatever reason ?)

Any help/insights/ideas much appreciated.

The Public Record Office reference on the image I've downloaded (through Genes Reunited) is HO107/709/6 page 21. Is that the sort of reference you're looking for ?

Apologies if I'm missing the obvious.

His Occupation looks like " Tenter ?"   Grin

Can you cut the occ bit of the image and post it seperatly in the common room!

In 1851 he is a builder employing 3 men so no clues there!!

The proper reference is HO107 piece 709 book 6 folio 37 page 21.

His occupation looks like timber merchant.

All the Registration Act required was Two Credible Witnesses who could be anybody from about the age of eleven.
