« on: Thursday 29 November 07 22:53 GMT (UK) »

Please can you help me, I need to know both parents of Joseph purdue born 1740 in Newbury - possibly St, Nicholas. I know the Mother was Martha - father not listed on Latterday Saints. . Also to confirm that this same Joseph Purdue married a Hannah Walker around 1770' ish, as I believe they had a child Luke Purdue born 1776. I have exhusted all my sources and I can't link up to other relatives. Many thanks.

In an earlier post you said that Luke was "definitely born in 1766 and his mother was Martha". Was it 1766 or 1776? I infer that Martha must have been Luke's grandmother as opposed to his mother.

The 1740 baptism on the IGI of Joseph Purdue in Newbury is a member submission and therefore unreliable. It should be checked against the parish register microfilm which you can do at your nearest Family History Centre of the LDS - possibly also checking for the baptism of Luke in 1766 or 1776 at the same time.

If you find the entry is correct it implies that Joseph was the illegitimate son of Martha Purdue.

I can confirm that Joseph PURDUE was baptised 3rd March 1741 in Speen Berkshire and his mother is given as Martha.  No father is mentioned.  However a James PURDUE and Martha PEARCE married 1st May 1740 in Speen.  (Information from microfiche of Speen parish register at Berkshire Records Office).
