I am trying to trace my ancestry in Scotland and am struggling to find my grandfather Charles Forgan.  According to the family he was born in Anstruther in Fife and his marriage certificate  shows he was born in ca 1852 and worked as a tailor. By the age of 28 he had moved to Middlesbrough, married and had a son and daughter.

I have found a Charles (Philip?) Forgan born September 1851 and baptised in March 1852 in Carnbee, the illegitimate son of Charles Forgan residing in Ayrshire (and married) and Mary Rowley. In the 1861 census for Anstruther Easter (Fife) a Charles Forgan aged eight is seen living with his mother Mary Laing and Stepfather Robert Laing.  I think that this must be my Great Grangfather. Family rumour says that were related to the Forgan golf club manufacturing family but I can see no evidence of this.

Can anybody help me to verify the origins of my Great Grandfather? Thanks.

Hi Jim,
From memory Charles Forgan (deceased) is listed on his marriage certificate, occupation Carrier. In fact Charles Forgan his father is shown as a proprieter and farmer in the census return for Scotland, whilst his supposed stepfather John Laing is shown as a carrier. Perhapshe chose to use his real fathers name but for some reason his stepfathers profession? Very confusing.

I'd go along with that.It's probable Charles jnr. didn't know his father's occupation so put carrier.Charles Snr. was also a mariner.I can't see anything wrong with what you have.Charles jnr. says his father is Charles Forgan & so does his mother.
There isn't another Charles Forgan around except later with Charles Snr's. legitimate child.
