Making progress until I come to Joseph Whiting. In 1841 Joseph  age 11 and his brother are with  Jemima Denton and son Robert Denton.  I had a Jemima Mackaness married to Thomas Whiting in 1827 Houghton, then Thomas Whiting
seems to have died and Jemima is not mentioned as a widow anywhere  but with Robert age 2 son of Jemima and the Whiting boys living with them it would seem that she has married a ? Denton.  Has anyone any other suggestions?  this family is so confusing I appreciate the help.

The IGI does have 2 baptism entries for John 1828 & Joseph 1830 Whiting in Horton, Northants to Thomas Whiting & Jemima Whiting. Doesn't say they are extracted or member submitted.   There is a FreeBMD death index of Thomas Whiting in Hardingstone RD (covers Horton, Houghton, Brafield) in Dec 1841 - but he may have died in Olney ?

Thanks to all you helpful people. The family tree is begining to make sense now. I couldn't understand why the census details never showed any relationship between Joseph and Denton. Smiley

This gets better all the time! I only had lacemaker before. Does anyone know where the girls would have learnt the  lacemaking trade, would they have worked in a factory?  I shall have to google lacemaking to find out more.

I would never have found the 1851 census entry without your folio no. etc I had searched  Ancestry for ages without success.

With everybody's help I think I have now got as far as possible with  this side of the family. The information that you have all given me ties in with the answers that were given last year when I was searching for Emily Whiting  and Elizabeth  Whiting/Ticklepenny.   Elizabeth appears to have been the only girl in a family of boys so she probably had to stay at home to be the 'housemaid'and  brought up the two illegitimate children passing them off as Joseph's daughters. Emily uses the name Whiting on her marriage certificate in 1902, but used the name Ticklepenny in 1901 Census.  My next task is to purchase certificates to verify the findings but that will have to wait until after Christmas.

Progress!
Just to let you know I have now received two copy birth certificates confirming Emily Harriet Whiting   born 1883, mother Elizabeth, but no details of father. Address West Street OLney.  Elizabeth was a shoe machinist in a Shoe factory.
Elizabeth's birth certificate with Joseph Whiting as father and Hephzibah Whiting, formerly Bailey her mother, in Olney. Joseph was a farm labourer.
Next step is to send for the marriage of Joseph and Hephzibah sometime but I know I am on the right track now.

There was a posting today on the Bedford Rootsweb message board by Joan Sims - were you aware ?

Is it possible that a baptism parish record would have the name of a child's father? I have Emily Whiting born in West Street  Olney in 1883 but no father's name. If sks could check for me it would be much appreciated.
