GARIB?
« on: Monday 28 April 08 14:40 UTC (UK) »

IGI shows Ellen Ferguson, daughter of Patrick Ferguson and Mary Connors, being born in 1880 "Garib, Sligo, Ireland".

I've searched and searched and can't come up with any townland, parish etc remotely similar to "Garib".

Anyone got any ideas, please?

Hello Kate,
was she still in Ireland in 1901?

The Leitrim Roscommon site (1901 census) has completed the Sligo indexes there is a Patrick and Mary Ferguson with a daughter Ellen aged 20 yrs there in Sligo town.

You could also send off for the birth certificate with the details you have- that would give you some more information

Best wishes

Having had a look at this family, it looks as though they might be “connected” (they use the same family names and I see that Father Patrick and daughter Mary Jane were both born in Co Fermanagh, as some of mine were).

But the ages are well out for most of them – and the names of the children were quite common.

I’ll keep a note of this family - Maybe Father Patrick on the 1901 is a brother of *my* Jean Ferguson b1865 in Ballyjamesduff, Cavan.  (I have Jean's Scottish DC, which shows her parents names as Patrick Ferguson and Mary Connors, and her age , so I know that Jean was born c1865/6)

Thank you for your help.

According to IGI Patrick Ferguson and Mary Connors had 2 daughters:
1. Jane Ferguson born 11 Nov.1865 Ballyjamesduff district, Co. Cavan.
2. Bridget Ferguson born 23 Aug.1872 Ballyjamesduff district, Co.Cavan.

Thanks Aghadowey, I had noted this from IGI.

Jane is definitely *mine*, according to her Scottish DC,as her age and names of both parents are correct.

But now I'm trying to get more info on her parents; it looks as though, being aglabs, the family travelled around.

Sligo library tells me that the nearest to Garib is:

Gerrib Big and Gerrib Little townlands in the Parish of Skreen in coastal west Sligo.

See www.seanruad.com to find details of townlands and parishes in Ireland (be sure to change default setting from exact match to search for prt of a word).
