In search of the Herefordshire origins of an 18th-century GWILLIM family made up of the following siblings (relationships proven by will):
James - "of Burghill" in 1771, when married Mary PRITCHARD at Hereford Cathedral; died 1788; John - married Sidney and died at London in 1771; Susanna - possibly married Mr. CARTWRIGHT; settled in London; died before 1824; Margaret - married Richard CHAMBERS "of Burghill" at Hereford Cathedral in 1746; Thomas - "of Pembridge" in 1749 when married Jane RAVENHILL "of Woolhope" at Hereford Cathedral; died London in 1784.
Anyone looking at the same family and might have knowledge of their origins?
My great grandfather was William Gwilliam b. 1847 Monmouth, and he married Eliza Kearn at Hereford in 1868. He is described as Thomas Gwilliam in marriage certificate, but am sure I have the right person.
Possibly his parents were Thomas Gwillim, Clergymans Servant b. Hereford born around 1810 and Susan Gwillim his wife born around same time. Thomas father could be William Gwillim, b. 1896 approx, of Harewood Hereford.
Our William & Eliza moved from Hereford to Salford, Lancashire a few years after their marriage
Hello Jan, Sorry to say that I cannot see any connection between our Gwillims. The family name is a difficult one as there are so many in Wales and the border counties of England. I am still at a loss with my own, but send you all the best wishes for your continuing search. I also find the spelling shifting between Gwillim and Gwilliam for the same people, presumably depending on the whim of the clergyman or clerk. Josh.
