Sussex Wills
« on: Sunday 02 December 07 10:02 GMT (UK) »

Hello all

The West Surrey FHS have produced a series of early will extracts on microfiche from documents that still exist dating from 1480. My interest is in the Longhursts of Surrey (Ewhurst, Ockley, Abinger, Wotton) who kept hopping over the county line to Sussex in the 1600's.

Does anyone know if something similar is available for Sussex?

Would I have to ask/go to the West Sussex Record Office for will information from this time period?

Thanks in advance

Dawn

I don't know of anything produced by the record office, but their catalogues are pretty good and can be searched on the A2A site:

http://www.a2a.org.uk

I've just put Longhurst into the search box and there are 19 hits in one catalogue at West Sussex alone - many of them mentioning the parishes in Surrey that you give.!  They are not necessarily wills but other documents.  You can't download them or anything but the catalogue description may help you decide if you need to follow them up.

Sussex Family History Group have a Wills index compiled from transcriptions of wills that their members have submitted.  There are four entries for Longhurst in the database:

Elizabeth and Richard Longhurst mentioned in 1813 - maybe in just one will, no indication of whose.
John Longhurst 1645
Will Longhurst 1721

These could all be true Sussex folk though, rather than county-hoppers if you'll pardon the expression  Wink  And they may be the beneficiaries rather than the testator.

Have a look at the A2A site - there could be some pointers for you.

Couldn't get to a wills database only to submit what I've got, is that because I'm not a member? So I didn't find the 4 you have suggested.

I've explored A2A in the past. As you say there are several hits, buts not what I'm currently looking for.

Oops, sorry, I didn't explain properly.  I found those four names via Familyhistoryonline, searching the name in Sussex and probate records.

Hi Dawn,
I presume you've tried Surrey Wills Online? http://www.rootsweb.com/~engsurry/  There's one Sussex one amongst them.

Hi Jan

Thanks so much for taking the time to do this, I know how long these things take, it's hugely apreciated. Some of the names & places look promising, Humfrey of Rudgewick is very early compared to the others. Looks like an interesting evening for me.   Grin

Hi Dawn

I'm impressed you could work out that Vmfre of Rowgewyke was Humfrey of Rudgewick - I've been puzzling over it Grin
