Hi

Thomas Vincent Horton married either Bridget McDonnell or Sarah Bragg in Apr-Jun 1853 at Newport. Can anyone tell me which one it was?  (Ref: vol. 6a p.1409 they are the two possible names on the same page.)

Can't see a Bridget Horton, but can see a Peter & Bridget Cavanagh (the other name on the page)

What year  & were was Thomas Vincent Horton born could then look him up on the census & see who he was living with Sara or Bridget.

Thomas was born c.1817 in Wolverhampton but I haven't been able to find him in 1861 census.

Have you found him in the earlier census?  There are a few Thomas Hortons born Wolverhampton and it would help if we could see where he was before 1861.  Was this a second marriage and if so, what was his first wife's name?  Every little helps!

Hi Barbara

I know this was his second marriage, if it's the same person. Thomas Horton appears in the 1841 census with wife Emma (nee Betteley/Bettey - they married in Dec. 1839) and daughter Emma. They lived in Pountney Place Wolverhampton. By 1851 they were living in Petit St. Wolverhampton and had 4 daughters - Emma, Sabina, Eliza, Elizabeth. In those days Thomas was a coffee mill maker.

I have found Sabina (great name for family searching, bless her) and Eliza in the 1861 census, and they were still in Wolverhampton.

By 1862 Emma Jr was in Lilleshall where she married Joseph Bradburn so it seems possible that she moved there with her father when her mother died?Huh?? Undecided

My gran used to reckon that the family was related to the Hortons who managed the Lilleshall Company in the 1800s and one of my aims is to try to find out if this is correct or just another of those family myths. Roll Eyes

Check this out and see if it makes sense:

Emma Horton b. 1841, Wolverhampton, parents Thomas Vincent and Emma. (FreeREG)
3 more children born - Sabina 1844, Eliza 1847, Elizabeth 1850. (FreeREG and 1851 census)
1851 census family living in Wolverhampton.
Dec 1852 Emma Sr dies. (FreeBMD)
Jun 1853 Thomas Vincent marries Sarah Bragg in Newport. (FreeBMD)
I check on LDS and find a Sara Bragg born Newport 1822 who married Ephraim Slynn in 1854. The name Slynn rings a bell. Smiley
Sep 1853 Thomas dies in Wolverhampton (FreeBMD), which explains why we can't find him in 1861 census!
Dec 1854 Sarah Horton marries Ephraim Slynn in Newport. (FreeBMD)
1861 census Eliza Horton age 14 is a servant living with Ephraim and Sarah Slynn (age 40) in Wolverhampton.
