Until Bob comes back, we have no proof that this is the correct family. Tati and I have been going around them all afternoon. James, snr was supposed to be a miller but he was a famer on everything that I've looked at.

Which James was the miller ?
It could be read as though James Jnr was the miller, and then his father James could have been a farmer. in rural areas, many people did 2 jobs, as they do today.
A mill in this area would have to be on a small stream as the River Wye is too far away.  From the map there appear to be a couple of small streams which eventually join and go to the Wye.

I am struggling with a plethora of Powells in Hereford, and Eardisley in particular.

I am looking for the birth details of James Powell, stated in the 1881 census to be a farmer of 50 acres at St Margaret's Farm, Woodseaves and aged 29 years. Married to a Sarah Ann.

He had 3 sons at that time, James Frederick, Albert John and William H.

I think that he married Sarah Ann Barber in 1874.

He was the son of another James Powell, shown as a miller in the 1871 census.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you can find this one on the 1871, it would be a great help  Smiley

 Smiley

Thank you all so much for your replies.

To clarify, the connection to the miller in Eardisley seems to be the most likely James Powell.

Come on Bob! Tell us more!!  Wink Cheesy

Here's (source IGI) what looks like his marriage:
JAMES POWELL - SARAH ANN BARBER
Marriage 29 SEP 1874   Eardisley, Herefordshire
(GRO reference Sep 1874 Kington 6a 998)

The marriage cert would show their fathers' names and occupations  Smiley

We've tried, Tati  Undecided

I've looked and looked. There are 38 pages in the Eardisley district on the 1871. I have looked at them all.  The only miller is a William Price, aged 39. The only Powell family appear to be the one that Tati and I have found before in which the head is Caroline, a widow, a draper, grocer and malster. The son, James, fits the description but there is no father, James - a miller or anything else.

 Wink

Thank you everyone for your kind and helpful suggestions.

I will obtain a marriage certificate for John Powell and Sarah Ann Barber and take it from there, probably at Hereford Register Office.

can't help you with look up but i was born only a mile away from st margrets in eardisley - you could also look under whitney  winforton and brilley - there are still a lot of powells around that area and finding him in london isn't unusual as they were on a drovers route from wales so  occasionally they seem to pop to london  to work  this happens in my own family who have  a 400 year history in the same area.if  i can be of further assistance let me know

 Cheesy

Thanks vic1 for this note.

I gather that there is a book entitled "Eardisley Houses and their Residences". Within this there is quite a section on my part of the Powell family, explanations on differnces in occupation between 1881 and 1891 census returns etc etc.

I am obtaining a copy from a bookshop in Kington.

I may return to further pursuit after the Powell line after I have read the book.

Thanks again,

 Grin

Thank you so much, vic 1. That is a very kind offer. I have read the book and the James Powell and the Richard Powell mentioned are indeed my relatives. I drove round Woodseaves but did not see the farm, which I figure as only of 50 acres will have been absorbed by now into a larger unit.

I mentioned the researchs to my older cousin, a Powell in Oregon, who has not visited the UK to my knowledge. He is most interested. I will be scanning what I have got from the Eardisley book and 1881 census info to him in the New Year. Any pics will be the icing on the cake.

Best wishes for Christmas,
