Hi all,
I am going over some old ground for which I don't have sources other than the census. According to census Charles Webb was born in 1833 in Catsfield, Sussex; if anyone is able to find a baptism record I would be eternally grateful particularly if it clears up his dubious parentage.
Many Thanks Sean

Hi Sean
This may not be much help, but in a trancription I have found the baptism of a James Webb, son of Harriet Webb in Catsfield on 9 Jan 1831.
Otherwise there are children born to Isaac and Mary Webb (last one baptised in 1825) and then to Stephen & Caroline Webb beginning in 1841.

Cheers Nell,
I think that James Webb may be Charles' brother, they both appear in the 1841 census together but without their mother Harriet. I take it there wasn't a father listed on his baptism?
Stephen would be Harriet's Brother.
I haven't as yet been able to tie in Isaac Webb with the other Webbs in Catsfield.
Charles Webb is my Great Great Grandfather so it is the end of the line if I cannot prove that Harriet is his mother.
Regards Sean

Hmm. Harriet was the only name shown. She does not appear to have had any other children who were baptised in Catsfield. I don't know if the original register would show more. Have you thought of trying to view the film of the register perhaps at an LDS Family History Centre if you can? Who was her father? Did he leave a will which might just provide a clue?
Isaac was married twice - his second marriage, to Mary Marchant, took place in Catsfield in 1814. His first wife was probably Lucy Battlemore. They also married in Battle in 1785.
Was Stephen baptised in Catsfield? No sign of Harriet in Catsfield baptisms.
A puzzle indeed.
