It's a long shot but there is a rachel carr registered on IGI with father robert and mother ann at crosscanonby, cumberland 17-1-1813.  Given that crosscanonby is directly opposite dumfriesshire and mother often told tales of being able to walk across the solway firth at very low tides, I wonder. Have you heard such storied Geoff?
On the down side robert would be getting on a bit by 1812 not that that stops one having a family. I havent investigated a robert ann marriage but that might be worth doing to see if it was just before 1812 or are there other siblings.
BTW don't worry too much about the spelling - they were often wrong.
Maybe geoff could see if Rachel was still in crosscanonby in 1841 with ann (if she was much younger than robert!). Just a thought

The Rachel that Bob refers to was the seventh (and last) child of Robert and Ann to be baptised at Crosscanonby (batch C035582).  I can't see any sign of them in 1841, by which time I would have expected the girls to have been married anyway.

As a furriner, I don't know any stories about people walking across from Scotland, but there was a bloke on Top Gear a couple of weeks ago who walked across the Humber estuary from Yorks to Lincs.

Evening Bob and Geoff, I certainly would not risk walking across the Solway apparently arunning horse could not beat the tidal surge. Any way I digress, need to find out more about this Robert and Rachel,it is early days. Who was his wife? when and where did he marry?. I cannot imagine how I can prove or not whether this Robert is an ancestor regards to you both stoop.

Geoff,
I'm fairly sure there's a bridge to do that. Back in the sixties at the folk club we used to sing a song"Will they ever bridge the Humber, will they ever fill that gap, or will we always have go around by Goole".
stoop,
I think thats the normandy coast at St. Malo that has that reputation. The solway does have a reputation but thats for quick sands and back ebbs.
