GODFREY family of Swimbridge and Landkey
« on: Tuesday 04 December 07 20:08 GMT (UK) »

I am searching for details of the Godfrey family from Swimbridge and Landkey in Devon. George Godfrey was my gg grandfather. He lived at Landkey and then moved to Swansea where he settled wih his wife Mary who was from Goodleigh in Devon. His mother was also called Mary and his father was William Godfrey born about 1799 from Swimbridge near Landkey. Any information would help. Thanks

Brilliant  Smiley You have verified everything I had already managed to find but I took ages doing so. And you have provided even more information.
2 things that I am still trying to find out:
1. The IGI shows William Godfrey's mother was probably Alice Godfrey so does this mean that William was probably illegitimate?
2. Who was George Godfrey's wife ? Here first name was Mary and she was born in Goodleigh in 1838 according to the census of 1871 (Killay, Swansea) where she lived with husband George and family. They must have moved there from Devon in the 1860's. Can't find any record on the IGI of George and Mary's marriage.
Thanks, Jeff

Hi Deb and Geoff, as well as the 2 things I mentioned earlier that I am still trying to find out, I am also struggling to establish where George Godfrey was in 1881. He's not on the 1881 census though I have found a death register entry for a George Godfrey for 1882 in Swansea.
Cheers, Jeff

Hi Jeff

I am assuming that William was the Illegitimate son of Alice ...If not his christening would have recorded a father .... so sorry ..I know what it feels like not to know ...but sometimes following the female line is the best way to go as we really only know who our mothers are ....

at least we have Alice's parents etc ...having a bit of  a unique name helps ...LOL

I wonder if Alice married after William was born ... and had other children ... I will look and see ... rather late here in the US ...will be back soon

Okay I think I have established that the registration district for Goodleigh and Landkey is Barnstaple ....do the children's names of George and Mary Godfrey give us any clues ...did they have visitors that holds a name ....
