William Greig's parents?
« on: Tuesday 01 April 08 11:51 BST (UK) »

Hi folks
Been trying to find the parents of William Greig who married Janet Mortimer on 28th November 1826 in Dundee.

One possibility is that he was born on 17th June 1798 to John Greig and Ann Lownie, can anyone shed any light  Undecided Jenc

Hello Jenc

Did your William live beyond 1855?  When/where was the last 'sighting' of him?  I see on the IGI only one ' submitted entry for a Samuel Greig born to this couple - b.14 Feb,  ch. 15 15 Feb1831.

Hi Steve
Unfortunately William must have died prior to the magic year of 1855.  Janet moved to Lambeth London and re-married there in 1837.
William and Janet had 2 other children born in Dundee - Ann Stark Greig 1828 and William Greig 1827.  William married Helen Barrie 1847 in Dundee, and both he and Samuel moved south to be with their mother and stepfather.

Hi jenc,

I take it you never checked Scotlands People because the marriage is on there, you should be able to get the parents names too.

Hi Betty
We have already got that certificate, unfortunately it only gives the wife Janet's father Samuel Mortimer.
Interesting though, on the same entry for November 1826, there are 2 other marriage contracts for a William LOWNIE, sailor and an
Alex GREIG, sailor, so far have not been able to connect them to our GREIG/LOWNIE
Our William Greig was a sailor also, but don't know if this is of any significance.  We think he may have been lost at sea, sometime between 1831 and 1837.

Hi Jenc,

I have never known a Scottish marriage certificate not to have the mothers name on it as well as the fathers. Maybe its because its so far back, not sure though. Sorry I can't be of anymore help to you though.

Hi Betty
Thank you anyway, it's maybe as you say, a bit too far back, oh for all those entries to give as much info as 1855 onwards, oh well Sad

Betty

Only from 1855 do certificates give both the mother and father's names. Before that, it really depended on the individual parishes - some give both father's names, others just the wife's. Some neglect to mention them at all, only giving the two names and date of marriage! Sad

Hi Hume 24.
Oh it's the pits isn't it?
I envy our future generations, it will be plain sailing for them to find out about us !!  Our lot are doing all the hard work, never mind, it's all worthwhile.

Hi Betty Boo,
The fact that John Greig and Ann Lownie had a child named William born 17 June 1798 in Dundee does not actually PROVE that this same William Greig is the one who married Janet Mortimer in Dundee in 1826 as the Marriage certificate does not state the name of either parent. It could just as easily have been William Greig born Dundee in 1805 to William Greig and Ann Ballingal.
So unfortunately, the matter has still not been solved.

Hi folks
This has been the problem from the start, the choice of 2 sets of parents for William!  The fact that William and Janet  had a daughter named Ann doesn't help with the Scottish naming process either, as both of the possible grandmothers are both named Ann, but if we look at the naming process for the sons, eldest named for paternal grandfather (William) and second son named for maternal grandfather (Samuel) this would veer to the grandparents being William Greig and Ann Ballingal, so I don't think we will ever solve the mystery.
Thanks to everyone for their help
