I have an ancestor located here at age 15, and I suspect that it was a place where orphans (I suspect he was an orphan) went to learn a trade. In the 1841 census it was located in in St George the Martyr, Surrey. Can anyone confirm its purpose in society..........or have any more information on it?
Thanks, Larry

The Victorian London site confirms that it was built as a place where younger prisoners were taught useful trades:

There may be more information included on the site - just need to track it down.
