All I can say, is never put anything on a Public tree that you don't want anyone to see or copy.  I have minimal information on GR and only open my tree if I am really certain the person asking is definitely a descendant of one of my ancestors and usually I ask them to open their tree first. Roll Eyes

The bulk of my research is on Legacy on my own laptop, but there are any number of family tree programs available.

a short reply is often a man-mail, they don't tend to elaborate as much as the ladies

I agree there, it doesn't matter what an e-mail is about, or to whom it is sent, if my husband writes it, it sounds very curt.  He doesn't mean it to come across like that, but he doesn't add the niceties that women would.  It's the same if he's writing letters, so he always gets me to check them over now before he sends them.

Lizzie

lol sorry but opposite in this house, i am forever telling the wife i think her responses to something looks a bit short, and she accuses me of writing war and peace when replying to something, i often get via genes "can i look at your tree" THAT'S IT!
and many times it is female, hasten to add i am never rude when i get that 'cos i NEVER ANSWER  Tongue
so sorry Lizzie have to disagree on that one Wink (oops just noticed you didn't say it first Lizzie, so i'll disagree with you agreeing Tongue )
only yesterday somebody sent a short email asking is such and such on your tree married to blah blah, i replied with a pretty long email saying how they were on my tree and why so they would know if they had a link, and i assume because there was no link, they havn't replied, i WOULD reply to say thanks for that and talking the time and trouble but different family

Have to agree re the putting things on a tree, in fact it's madness to then not expect someone somewhere is going to abuse it if its out there in the big WWW, this forum compared to MOST has to be the best for people's attitude towards help,
hence people don't mind keep doing it, (still winds me up when they don't acknowledge people taking time lol)
i will stop before i ramble again Shocked

I don't know how any of you have tried using GenesReunited, but they have something that is curter than curt and ruder then rude

That is a template reply that says basically "we are not related. very sorry" Those that use this, and there are many there, never expand at all, they just hit the template button.

I have found it so annoying that I have stopped using that site

I have 2 trees - a public one on ancestry and a private one which I have loads on now, not only for privacy reasons but cos if I make a major cock-up, only I will know and can put it right, without having had anyone copy people over erroneously.

Ancestry is my main tree and I put virtually ecerything I can find on it.

It is a wee bit galling sometimes to find my photos appear on other trees with no message of thanks or any communication whatsoever - but then I think deep down, it's actually quite nice that my ancestors are being looked at - if only briefly - and that they are 'out there' in webland and not being forgotten.

And then I quite like the fact that for a short whilst at least, someone has looked at them and thought about them, and I'm glad that people are copying my photos Smiley

And eventually someone might collect them who has something useful to give back to me!

I've found a few pics of my relatives on other people's trees, and have copied them to my desktop so I can show my family, but I don't have any need to publicise them as they're already there.
At least if people are nicking your pics it's you who have the originals - I'd rather have physical photos than a piccie on a laptop Smiley

Isn't there a way to disable right-click (etc) on these sites, so people can look but not copy them?

Not in any way that will stop a professional thief

1. You can disable right click easily

2. I can get round that by using "ctl C" to copy your photo and store

3. If you try to stop that I can use a screen grab to get the whole screen then put it into Photoshop and cut out and store the bit I want

4. You can try something more sophisticated than that, and there are ways, but the determined thief will always get your photos if they really want to! For example password protection

If you, for whatever reason, do not want your photos used by anyone else, the only way is never to put them on the web

Shocked Can you tell me how to hotwire a car too?!   Tongue Grin

Seriously... it's difficult isn't it, I take alot of band pics and am always having them nicked with no credit given (I found a site selling them once!!) - I don't know how to watermark them or anything, so I add my name in small text on a part of the photo where if it was cut out the photo would be useless. That's a possibility - family photos wouldn't look perfect but if you have the original or copy of, it doesn't matter too much.

Afraid you cannot win on that one either

It does not have to be cut out.  Photoshop has a neat little "clone" stamp and that can be removed that without altering the photo  Sad

I don't hot wire cars, but I can do most things with photos!

Yup!

As I say if someone really wants your photo they will get it. If you do not want it used elsewhere then keep it in your photo album.

If you look at the photo restoration sub forum at RootsChat you will see how Photoshop can manipulate photos. With a bit of practice you could do it yourself.
