Major New Oxfordshire FHS Online Resource: Transcribed Wills
« on: Thursday 06 December 07 21:54 GMT (UK) »

Oxfordshire Family History Society is pleased to announce a major new
project - one in which I envisage many Oxfordshire RootsChat members
will be excited to participate.

Linked from the home page at www.ofhs.org.uk is an embryonic library of
Wills and Related Documents related to Oxfordshire.

There are about 500 documents there already, with an index allowing the
library to be accessed either by Testator name or, more generally, by all
the names mentioned in all the documents.

The library has the potential of having a significant number of Oxfordshire
wills deposited, resulting in the possibility of visitors to the library
finding names of interest to themselves in the indexes - maybe a transcript
of direct relevance - or maybe a person of interest appearing as a
beneficiary in a will.

There is an article in the forthcoming Oxfordshire FHS journal giving more
detail of the project.  More donations of will transcripts are very much
welcomed - they will be formatted as required.  We will be pleased to
receive submissions from both members and non-members of the Society -
whilst hoping some non-members might like to become members!

The project was conceived by OFHS member, Dave Beames,
to whom the Society is very grateful for his initiative and time given to
the project.  Dave is pleased to receive submissions - see the web pages for
further details.

This is an excellent and very generous site - on my first visit yesterday I found the answer to an obscure marriage via the surnames Baughan/Boffin. I had no idea Baughan was a variation of the name Boffin and vice versa!

Jill -

This is an excellent and very generous site - on my first visit yesterday I found the answer to an obscure marriage via the surnames Baughan/Boffin. I had no idea Baughan was a variation of the name Boffin and vice versa!

Great news!  Cliff is a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies www.one-name.org , and is doing a one-name study of the name, so worth geting in touch with him !

For marriages in Oxfordshire, the OFHS has a full marriage index - see the Search Services at www.ofhs.org.uk for full details of searches.

Debz -

These are only a very few - we're looking to more submissions from donors.  Tell me the name of the testator & date of the will you hope exists, and if the Oxfordshire Record Office has it I'll give you the reference.  You can then order a copy, if you wish, and if you'd like to offer us the transcript we'd be very grateful.  If you'd like help in transcribing it, we can offer that.

Hi Everybody

I too found this resource fascinating but was disappointed not to find anything relavant to my own family tree.

I have a Charles Brooks, gunsmith from Witney, who died circa 1830-40
John Nelson, stonemason from Banbury, who died circa 1845-1850
William Riley, mill/wheelwright from Neithrop, who died circa 1841-1851
and various Pinfolds, blacksmiths from Banbury.

Would these occupations not have been particularly lucrative and therefore not require the business owners to leave wills?  I had always assumed there would be wills ... if only I knew where to look!

Give it a chance, there are thousands of wills that have yet to be transcribed

Wills are usually easy enough to find - not that there are that many to find.
Before 1858 an Oxfordshire resident would have his will proved through one of a few ecclesiastical courts - indexes of these wills are available.

For instance: Charles Brooks, ironmonger, Witney, 1836 W.Aff 224.343; 251/1/10 (Will and Affidavit).
The others are not in the Oxfordshire or Canterbury indexes - but they are not in occupations that would necessarily mean they had much of an estate to leave.

Oxfordshire Record Office will be able to supply copies  of the Brooks documents - then, when you have transcribed them you can send a copy to OFHS and the database will grow a little.

Thanks Newburychap

As I live in Yorkshire a visit to Oxfordshire Record Office is not an option for me - I'd be grateful for any advice you could offer as to how I could go about obtaining this document, for example, is there a way to email or telephone to ask for a copy to be posted?  Sorry for my ignorance but I haven't looked into obtaining wills before.

Julie,

If you email

archives[---at---]oxfordshire.gov.uk

and give them details of the will you would like a copy of (with the reference), they will let you know what the cost will be and give you an address to send the cheque to. They then send you the will - pretty quickly as well, if my memory serves me right!

Good luck with that, Julie. I also live in Yorkshire - so have the same problem with finding these things out from a distance!  Roll Eyes

I have a question for Newburychap - what source did you use to locate that will for Julie so quickly? Is it a source that is available to us all i.e. online, or is it for purchase?

Thanks,
Jill

The Canterbury wills are online (PCC = Prerogative Court of Canterbury) via documentsonline - see the TNA website.

Oxfordshire wills (Diocesan, Archdeaconry and Peculiars) are indexed in books. I have the volume covering D & A 1733-1857 and P 1547-1856. I bought it earlier this year at TNA - they were selling them off for £6, I doubt that they have any left. It is part of The Index Library published by the British Record Society in 1997.

This only indexes testators but there are also some excellent little books indexing persons named in wills from the late C18th available from OFHS.
