Oxfordshire Family History Society is pleased to announce a major new project - one in which I envisage many Oxfordshire RootsChat members will be excited to participate.
Linked from the home page at www.ofhs.org.uk is an embryonic library of Wills and Related Documents related to Oxfordshire.
There are about 500 documents there already, with an index allowing the library to be accessed either by Testator name or, more generally, by all the names mentioned in all the documents.
The library has the potential of having a significant number of Oxfordshire wills deposited, resulting in the possibility of visitors to the library finding names of interest to themselves in the indexes - maybe a transcript of direct relevance - or maybe a person of interest appearing as a beneficiary in a will.
There is an article in the forthcoming Oxfordshire FHS journal giving more detail of the project. More donations of will transcripts are very much welcomed - they will be formatted as required. We will be pleased to receive submissions from both members and non-members of the Society - whilst hoping some non-members might like to become members!
The project was conceived by OFHS member, Dave Beames, to whom the Society is very grateful for his initiative and time given to the project. Dave is pleased to receive submissions - see the web pages for further details.
Wendy Chairman, Oxfordshire FHS.

This is an excellent and very generous site - on my first visit yesterday I found the answer to an obscure marriage via the surnames Baughan/Boffin. I had no idea Baughan was a variation of the name Boffin and vice versa!

Gt-gt-grandmother Elizabeth Nelson 1847- 1936

Hi Everybody
I too found this resource fascinating but was disappointed not to find anything relavant to my own family tree.
I have a Charles Brooks, gunsmith from Witney, who died circa 1830-40 John Nelson, stonemason from Banbury, who died circa 1845-1850 William Riley, mill/wheelwright from Neithrop, who died circa 1841-1851 and various Pinfolds, blacksmiths from Banbury.
Would these occupations not have been particularly lucrative and therefore not require the business owners to leave wills? I had always assumed there would be wills ... if only I knew where to look!
Regards, Julie

Thanks Newburychap
As I live in Yorkshire a visit to Oxfordshire Record Office is not an option for me - I'd be grateful for any advice you could offer as to how I could go about obtaining this document, for example, is there a way to email or telephone to ask for a copy to be posted? Sorry for my ignorance but I haven't looked into obtaining wills before.
Regards Julie
