Trying to build a family tree. Hope to find the maiden name of Jane Kerr born in 1867 at Pease Mill, Cockburnspath, Berwickshire. She married date unknown my great grandfather William Grosset born Edinburgh in 1867. He may or may not be her second husband in which case I'd also like to know the name of her first husband.

Hi buckscot
Welcome to rootschat - could you say how you know where she was born but not her maiden name or anything more about her?
There are quite a lot of Kerr marriages to a Jane but no William Grosset (variations) that I can see.
If we could find her death, it would help with her maiden name and marriage date. Do you have any idea when she died?
Regards

Hi
This looks like Jane in 1871....

her parent is either Barbara or Jane....
1881:Oldhamstocks , East Lothian Ref: Parish 714 , ED 1, pg 1 Address: Street Head: William BRYDEN 55, Miller, b Edinburgh Sister: Barbara BRYDEN 58, Dressmaker, b Dalkeith, Edinburghshire Sister: Jane BRYDEN 46, Domestic Servant, b Duddingston, Edinburghshire Neice: Jane BRYDEN 14, Scholar, b Cockburnspath, Berwickshire
You would have to get a look at the originals on Scotlands People to determine their marital status' and the exact order off enumeration,,,,however:
IGI: Jane BRYDEN born 15 Mar 1867, Cockburnspath, Berwickshire Mother: Jane BRYDEN, no father listed.

That's great, Ambly - good searching to get the censuses
I can't work out William Kerr and his parentage yet and it's brain shut down time
Could this be a first marriage as he is down as 38 - i.e. not born 1867 but more like 1854

Scottish records are good, Patrish
Most C of S records are on the IGI to about 1874 (though not all online) and the BMDs are available to search and download the images - all for £1.20. They give details of both parents as well

Thanks for your help - fantastic. Bryden is my grandfather's and brother's middle name so I should have made the link although my grandfather is mistakenly referred to as William R Kerr in the 1901 census.
I suspected Jessie Kerr's middle name is Douglas. I recall her mentioning the Douglases. She lived with them at some time early in her life while her father and mother went off to America. She told me before she went into a home that there was not much left financially as her father had gambled most of it on the Mississippi riverboats.

Thanks Gadget. I understand my great grandfather Williim Kerr was in his 90s when he died in the late 1940s in Glasgow (date unknown). His son, William died around March 1950 at only 57 (precise date unknown) though his brother and sister lived to 96 and 94 - they were sort of surrogate grandparents in a way as both grandfathers were dead when I was born and my grandmothers died 1953 and 1957. My father married a little over a month after the death of his father - a bit soon I would have thought but I believe the family was matriarchal and I sense the father was not treated very respectfully.
