Hi SWIPPYDOO
This is what we believe is the descendancy:
1) James Arthur MALE born 1851/52 (mother Mary Ann [UNKNOWN] widow of George MALE fruiterer); married: Mary Ann HOUNSELL in 1873, they had son:
2) James Arthur MALE born 1874. he married Charlotte Theresa S GARLAND in 1896, they had son:
3) James Albert MALE b 1898
Perhaps the fact that James Arthur MALE b 1851/1852 married a woman with the same apparent forename as his mother, is the confusing part!
The Mary Ann [UNKNOWN] who married - we think (it's not proved!) James DAVIS in 1859, was the widow of George MALE the Fruiterer. It is this Mary Ann's ( illigitimate?) son, James Arthur MALE b 1851/52 who we think fathered James Arthur MALE b 1875.
If this all proves correct, then when widow Mary Ann MALE nee [UNKNOWN] remarried in 1859 to James DAVIS, he became the stepfather to her illigitimate son, James Arthur MALE b 1851/1852.
Hope this helps!
Cheers AMBLY

Unless a Rootschatter has any personal knowledge of Phyllis Elliott, we would not be able to help with her parents names as she was born after the 1901 census
